Manchester United and Harry Amass are heading into the season with uncertainty as Luke Shaw remains the only viable starter at left-back.
Manchester United teenager Harry Amass is facing an uncertain future at Old Trafford. The 19-year-old left-back made his senior debut under Ruben Amorim during the 2024/25 campaign. But despite showing promise in pre-season, he is now tipped to leave the club before the end of the summer.
Amass spent last season on loan. He first joined Sheffield Wednesday, where he impressed on an individual level despite the club’s struggles. The supporters showed a mixed response to his performances. He was recalled in January before joining Norwich City for the second half of the campaign. Unfortunately, his stint at Norwich was wrecked by a serious injury.
Andy Mitten: ‘I cannot see a future for him’
During the latest episode of the Talk of the Devils podcast, renowned Manchester United journalist Andy Mitten delivered a blunt assessment. He insisted he ‘cannot see’ the 19-year-old lingering at Carrington beyond the summer. Carl Anka agreed, believing that the young Englishman is still ‘not good enough’ to play an instrumental role at Man Utd. Mitten also agreed that the teenager needs regular senior football to polish his raw talent and accelerate his development.
Andy Mitten believes INEOS should either loan him out or sell him while retaining a buy-back option. United are open to selling the academy starlet for only £6 million. His current contract expires next June.
Left-back dilemma and United’s transfer plans
United are keen to bring in a new left-back capable of rotating with Luke Shaw. Shaw’s injury record should be enough to convince INEOS that a Premier League-ready alternative is required. Tyrell Malacia has already left the club on a free transfer. However, United have not found any joy on this front thus far. They missed out on their top target Lewis Hall, with Newcastle making it clear that the 21-year-old is not for sale.
The verdict on Manchester United’s left-back situation
United are currently going into the new season with Shaw as their only senior option at left-back. They need Shaw’s replacement. His injury record is understandable with age, plus he doesn’t seem the most naturally athletic in the first place. Although he played all games in the league last season but his injury-prone history makes the need of a sound left back even more pressing.
Patrick Dorgu is likely to be used as a left-sided attacker as well as a left-back. Despite the lack of options behind Shaw, most sources believe Amass has been placed on the transfer list. The Red Devils are now being linked with alternative targets like Club Brugge’s Joaquin Seys and Racing Santander’s Jorge Salinas.
Until they secure a new signing, United must not offload Amass, who remains Shaw’s most convincing substitute. Rather than selling him outright, United could send him out on loan for the next six months and reassess his future when the January window opens. Manchester United have been relatively quiet in the transfer window, despite missing on key targets to Premier League rivals. With just 11 days remaining until the start of the season, Manchester United needs to be quick on its transfers.
