Manchester United are doing everything they can to keep highly-rated academy prospect JJ Gabriel at Old Trafford as interest grows in the teenager. The 15-year-old is regarded as one of the brightest talents in the club’s youth system and has already generated considerable excitement at Carrington.
The Manchester Evening News reports that United are determined to retain Gabriel amid growing outside interest.
Man Utd determined to protect JJ Gabriel
Gabriel has already earned the nickname “Kid Messi” because of his close control and ability to glide past opponents.
His performances have made him one of the most talked-about players in United’s academy, although the club are keen to manage his development carefully rather than rush him towards the first team.
Former United winger Lee Sharpe has also urged patience.
GOAL reports that Sharpe believes Gabriel should be protected from too much expectation and may not yet be ready for a regular senior role during the 2026/27 season.
The youngster has already faced the physical side of youth football, with Sharpe pointing out that opponents have often targeted him because of his technical ability.
United therefore have two priorities.
The first is keeping one of their most promising academy players away from interested rivals. The second is ensuring his development continues at the right pace.
Carrington has produced a long line of first-team players, and Gabriel is regarded internally as another prospect with significant potential.
For now, United appear determined to give him the time and environment required to take the next step without allowing the growing hype to become a distraction.
