Tottenham let themselves down over Tynan Thompson transfer

Manchester United signed Tynan Thompson for a reported £4m fee, expected to rise to another £4m with bonuses.

It’s not often Manchester United pinch a top talent from Tottenham’s academy and have Spurs’ own fans wondering what on earth their club was thinking. But that’s exactly what’s happened with the arrival of Tynan Thompson.

The 18-year-old left winger joined United on July 20 for an initial £4m, with a further £4m in potential add-ons. The deal also includes a 15 per cent sell-on clause for Spurs. Thompson had reportedly rejected a contract proposal from Tottenham in January, and with his deal running down, Spurs were left with little choice but to cash in.

A star overlooked by his own club

Thompson was in sensational form for Spurs’ youth sides last season, racking up 22 goals and 12 assists in 55 matches for the U18s. He also scored seven goals in seven UEFA Youth League games and was twice named in Tottenham’s Champions League matchday squads. He’s also an England U18 international with seven caps. Yet despite all that, he never got a proper look-in.

Spurs youth expert John Wenham didn’t hold back when discussing the situation on the Last Word On Spurs podcast. “Tynan Thompson wasn’t given a look in at all, he was scoring every week for the U21s,” Wenham said. “Spurs didn’t have a left winger because of injuries and Mikey Moore was at Rangers, Tynan was just completely overlooked.”

When asked if there’s a genuine pathway from the academy to Spurs’ first team, Wenham’s answer was damning: “Right now, you’d have to say no.”

Tynan Thompson is a perfect fit for United’s system

Thompson is exactly the sort of attacker Manchester United fans love to watch. He’s a left-sided forward who loves to cut inside and shoot on his stronger right foot. But what really caught United’s attention is his ability to use both feet.

The move also fits a familiar pattern for United. It’s similar to what they did with Ayden Heaven, who arrived from Arsenal for just £1.5m and has since made 24 appearances for the first team. United are clearly looking to repeat that trick. Sign a promising young player from a rival’s academy, give them a clear pathway, and watch them develop.

Thompson is already training with the U21s but there’s a real chance he could get first-team minutes this season. With him and Marcus Rashford on the left wing, there is less of a queue for chances. That leaves the door open for Thompson to stake his claim.

With Rashford likely to be a massive influence as he came through the same profile, making his debut young with similar direct running and natural width, Thompson has the perfect mentor at the club. He’s quick, fearless, and confident going forward. For just £4m up front, this could turn out to be one of United’s shrewdest pieces of business in years.

Spurs might have a sell-on clause, but that won’t soften the blow if Thompson fulfills his potential at Old Trafford.
