Youri Tielemans: The £35m Steal Lighting Up United’s Pre-Season
When Manchester United opened the chequebook this summer, the marquee money went on attacking flair. Yet the arrival that has pundits purring cost a fraction of the headline deals. Youri Tielemans, signed from Aston Villa for a reported £35m in July, has slipped into Michael Carrick’s midfield with the ease of a player who has been at Old Trafford for years — and the early verdicts have been glowing.
After an assured showing against Paris Saint-Germain in the Red Devils’ latest pre-season outing, the Belgian is being talked about as the shrewdest piece of business United have done all window. For a club that has too often overpaid for underwhelming returns, a £35m midfielder outshining the big-money signings is exactly the kind of story the Stretford End wants to hear.
Why Youri Tielemans looks a bargain
The praise has been hard to miss. Former Chelsea midfielder John Obi Mikel did not hold back, branding the deal “a f***ing steal” and arguing United have landed a ready-made international for well below the going rate in today’s market. He is not alone: one pundit went further, suggesting the Belgian has already outshone the club’s more expensive summer arrivals in Bryan Mbeumo, Matheus Cunha and Benjamin Šeško. His calm cameo against PSG, knitting play together in the middle of the park, only fuelled the sense that United have unearthed real value.
The reasoning is simple. Tielemans arrives as a proven Premier League operator with a Villa Park CV that included Champions League football, an eye for a pass and the kind of goal threat from midfield United have lacked. The Manchester Evening News highlighted two qualities in particular — his range of passing and his composure in tight areas — as the traits that will most quickly translate to Carrick’s system.
The midfield control United have been missing
There is a bigger picture here, too. Since Casemiro’s departure, Carrick has needed a senior head to sit between Bruno Fernandes and the pace of the front line, and Tielemans looks tailor-made for the job. Wearing the No. 18, he slots alongside fellow new arrival Andrey Santos to give United a midfield that can both keep the ball and break lines — a balance that was often missing last season. Crucially, his presence should ease the creative burden on Bruno Fernandes and give a young talent like Kobbie Mainoo a steadying platform to grow around.
It also speaks to a smarter approach in the market. After years of scattergun spending, United’s summer business has leaned on value as much as star power, and the early returns on Tielemans suggest the recruitment team have found a genuine bargain rather than another expensive gamble.
The real tests are coming. United round off pre-season against Leeds on 12 August and Milan on 15 August before the Premier League opener at Hull City on 22 August. If Youri Tielemans keeps performing like this, that reported £35m fee may end up looking like the transfer of the summer — and United, for once, will have got their money’s worth.
