Paul Pogba faces uncertain future as former Manchester United star suffers another blow to career

Paul Pogba’s difficult return to professional football has taken another turn.

The former Manchester United midfielder joined Monaco in June 2025 on a free transfer, hoping to rebuild his career after serving an 18-month doping suspension. Now, though, the Ligue 1 club are trying to reach an agreement with Pogba’s representatives over a financial settlement that would bring his stay to an early end.

Paul Pogba comeback has failed to take off

Transfer reporter Fabrizio Romano reported that Monaco want to mutually terminate Pogba’s deal by September 1. Reports from Nice Matin and Le Parisien have also indicated that the club have informed his camp about their plans.

The decision comes after Pogba suffered another thigh injury during pre-season training. The latest setback has added to a difficult period for the 33-year-old, who struggled to make an impact during his first campaign back in the game.

Pogba had an injury-marred 2025-26 season where he made only six substitute appearances. Those outings were restricted to just 115 minutes of competitive football.

The latest injury setback leaves Pogba facing another uncertain spell at a time when he was supposed to be rebuilding his career.

Monaco have now made their position clear by opening discussions over ending the midfielder’s contract. His current deal was due to remain in place until 2027, but the club want to give him the opportunity to find another destination before the transfer deadline.

The final decision, however, remains with Pogba.

Another setback for Manchester United’s former record signing

For Manchester United supporters, Pogba’s latest problems will bring back memories of a player who once arrived at Old Trafford with huge expectations.

United brought Pogba back from Juventus in 2016 for £89 million for a second time, making him the club’s record signing at the time. His second spell in Manchester ended in 2022 when he returned back to Juventus for the second time.

Since then, his career has taken a hit and has been disrupted by injuries before his doping case led to a suspension that initially stood at four years. The ban was later reduced to 18 months after Pogba appealed to the Court of Arbitration for Sport, allowing him to return to football in March 2025.

His move to Monaco was meant to provide a fresh start but injuries and limited playing time have once again restricted his proper return to professional football regularly.

The latest setback to Pogba’s career of a mutual termination, would leave the World Cup winner searching for another club again after such a frustrating comeback. For United fans, it is another reminder of how quickly Pogba’s career changed from one of football’s brightest stories into a fight simply to stay available and playing.
