United Academy: The Kids Michael Carrick Has His Eye On

There was a moment in Trondheim last month, somewhere inside a 5-0 dismantling of Rosenborg, when the United academy did what it has always done at this club and stuck its hand up. Shea Lacey opened the scoring. Harry Amass got on the scoresheet too. Both spent pre-season looking entirely at home in senior company.

Michael Carrick noticed. In an interview carried by the club’s official website, the head coach made a point of saying he has his eyes on United’s young players — a small line, but a meaningful one for a squad about to play Champions League football for the first time since 2023-24.

The United academy names already inside the squad

This is not a hypothetical group. Eleven of the club’s youngest players carry senior shirt numbers for 2026-27. Ayden Heaven (26), Diego León (35) and Amass (41) sit among the defenders. Jack Fletcher (38), Tyler Fletcher (39), Toby Collyer (43), Daniel Gore (44) and Lacey (46) are listed as midfielders. Chido Obi (32) and Ethan Wheatley (36) are forwards. Dermot Mee (45) is fifth in a five-deep goalkeeping order behind Altay Bayındır, Karl Darlow, Tom Heaton and Senne Lammens.

Some are true graduates of Carrington. Others, like Heaven and León, were recruited young from elsewhere. Either way, they are in the building and they have numbers on their backs — which is more than most of them could say twelve months ago.

Lacey is the one drawing the loudest noise. The Manchester Evening News reports a verdict on his immediate future after a standout pre-season, while the BBC has been asking whether Amass is ready for the left-back role on a permanent basis. Neither question existed in May.

The next wave coming through

Behind them, the conveyor belt keeps turning. The MEN’s latest academy notebook picks out JJ Gabriel’s debut and the impact of Kai Rooney at youth level — names Red Devils supporters will track closely this season, even if first-team involvement is some way off.

It is worth being clear-eyed about the maths, though. Carrick wants more senior signings before the window closes on 1 September, and United have already added Andrey Santos, Youri Tielemans and Cristian Orozco. The club did not disclose the fees for Santos and Tielemans, but they were widely reported at around £48m and £35m. Every experienced arrival is, by definition, one fewer opening for a teenager.

Why this season is different for the United academy

The Champions League changes the sums. Eight league-phase fixtures land on the calendar once the draw is made on 27 August, on top of a Premier League season and two domestic cups United enter at the third round. Rotation stops being a luxury and becomes an obligation — and that is usually when Old Trafford’s youngsters get their window.
