Harry Maguire backs Marcus Rashford at Manchester United

Harry Maguire has made it clear that Manchester United’s players would like to see Marcus Rashford remain at Old Trafford this summer.

Rashford made his first United appearance since December 2024 during Saturday’s 4-2 pre-season defeat to AC Milan in Wroclaw. The forward came on after the break and looked dangerous, showing some moments of magic but was unable to find the net.

His future remains uncertain with the transfer window still open, but Maguire believes United would be stronger with Rashford in the squad.

Maguire wants Marcus Rashford to stay

Speaking after the defeat to Milan, Maguire admitted he doesn’t know what will happen with his team-mate.

“Obviously the transfer window is still open,” Maguire said.

The United defender then made his own preference perfectly clear.

“As players, we hope he stays because if he does, he is a big asset to have. He can improve us for sure.”

Rashford didn’t have long to make an impact against Milan, but there were encouraging signs. His pace and movement caused problems for the Italian defence, and Maguire felt the forward could easily have ended the evening with a goal.

“You saw when he came on, he threatened the backline really well. He could have scored. He’s a huge threat.”

Maguire has spent years alongside Rashford at Manchester United and believes that experience would also benefit the rest of the squad.

“I’ve played with Marcus for numerous years and I know that playing against him and playing with him in training is going to help us.”

Marcus Rashford has support at Old Trafford

Rashford has returned to Manchester United after a decent season with Barcelona. He made 49 appearances for the Catalan club and scored 14 goals as they won La Liga.

His form has given United and Michael Carrick something to consider as they assess what comes next.

Former United striker Andy Cole has also backed Rashford to reproduce that level at Old Trafford.

“I think Marcus is a super player, fingers crossed he has the same kind of season he had when he was at Barcelona last season. I’m looking forward to it. I’ve got nothing but positive things to say about him,” Cole said.

Cole also believes Marcus Rashford looked much happier and more confident during his spell in Spain.

“I thought he was brilliant, seemed to have got his mojo back. I’m one of his biggest fans so I hope he plays very well for Manchester United this season. Just gets his head down and does what he knows what he’s good at doing, simple as that.”

Michael Carrick has also welcomed Rashford back into the squad and insists the forward has returned in a positive frame of mind.

“He’s our player, you know, and he’s come back great. He’s just like any other player,” Carrick explained. “I’ve known Marcus a long time and, you know, he gives us something a little bit different. And he’s been in great spirits since he’s been back.”

United’s decision now comes down to whether Rashford can build on his encouraging return and convince the club that his future should remain in Manchester.
