Man Utd Women handed unexpected six-game boost after Champions League miss

Manchester United Women’s failure to qualify for the Champions League has produced an unexpected six-game opportunity for new head coach Eva Olid.

United finished fourth in the Women’s Super League last season, narrowly missing European qualification after Chelsea secured third place.

That disappointment means United will now be available for the revamped domestic League Cup, which has been renamed the Subway Players Cup for the 2026/27 campaign.

Man Utd Women handed six guaranteed cup games

The competition has undergone a significant overhaul.

WSL Football has confirmed that Champions League-qualified clubs will no longer take part, with the Players Cup instead designed specifically to provide meaningful minutes for teams without European football.

Arsenal and Manchester City have qualified directly for the Champions League league phase, while Chelsea face Real Sociedad in qualifying. United are absent from this season’s European competition after finishing fourth.

That puts Olid’s side in line to participate in the new Swiss-style league phase, where every club is guaranteed six matches against regionally drawn opponents.

For United, those extra fixtures could prove particularly valuable.

Eva Olid gets vital development opportunity

The new format is specifically intended to create more minutes for younger and fringe players rather than leaving non-European squads underloaded.

That fits neatly with United’s wider direction.

ReadManUtd reported earlier this summer that the Women’s Under-21 side are moving to Carrington as the club attempts to strengthen the pathway between academy and first-team football.

Olid arrives with a reputation for player development after leading Hearts through the most successful period in their history before taking over at United.

Six guaranteed cup fixtures could therefore provide opportunities to assess academy players and manage the workload of senior figures during her first season.

Champions League disappointment could create trophy opportunity

There is another consequence.

United reached last season’s League Cup final before losing 2-0 to Chelsea at Ashton Gate.

This time, Chelsea, Arsenal and Manchester City will all be absent from the competition if they are competing in the Champions League.

That removes three of the strongest squads in English women’s football from United’s route to the trophy.

Missing European football remains a major disappointment for a club that reached last season’s Champions League quarter-finals.

But the new Players Cup format gives Olid something useful in return: six guaranteed competitive fixtures, more development minutes and a potentially clearer route towards silverware.
