Brighton boss breaks silence on Carlos Baleba amid Manchester United links

Brighton boss Fabian Hurzeler has refused to give anything away about Carlos Baleba’s future as Manchester United continue to push for the midfielder.

Baleba has emerged as one of United’s main targets this summer, with Michael Carrick keen to add another midfielder after the arrivals of Youri Tielemans and Andrey Santos. United have reportedly made an offer worth £60 million plus £5m in potential add-ons for the 22-year-old.

Brighton, though, aren’t giving Manchester United any help in their pursuit.

Hurzeler refuses to discuss Carlos Baleba

Hurzeler was asked about Baleba’s situation ahead of Brighton’s opening Premier League game but immediately shut down the subject.

“He’s a Brighton player. Like I said, I’ll never comment on any rumours that are currently in the media, it’s also something I definitely can’t control.”

The Brighton boss insisted his attention was elsewhere, with the new Premier League season about to begin.

“A lot of things are written, I know about situations but again, in two days I have a very important game together with my team and with my staff. We want to have a good start in the Premier League season, that’s the only focus we have at the moment.”

Carlos Baleba will not be involved in that game after picking up an ankle injury during pre-season. His absence only adds another layer to the growing speculation over his future.

Hurzeler did, however, acknowledge that Brighton’s success naturally brings interest in their best players.

Brighton know offers will arrive

Baleba has developed into one of Brighton’s most valuable players, and Hurzeler accepts that attracting attention is part of the club’s success.

“In football, you have to understand, it’s normal if you’re successful as a team, if the team is doing well, they’ve had some good achievements, then an individual can shine.”

The German coach also admitted Brighton had expected this sort of situation during the summer.

“It was clear for everyone this might happen during a busy transfer window.”

United first made an enquiry about Baleba last summer but were put off by Brighton’s valuation, which was reported to be around £100m at the time.

The Reds now believe they can get the deal done for considerably less, with their latest offer reportedly reaching £65m including add-ons.

Brighton chief executive Paul Barber also refused to rule out a deal when asked about the midfielder the previous day.

“It’s not something that I can talk about right now.”

Barber added that Brighton have to consider any serious proposal while also protecting the strength of their squad.

“So nothing really to say on Carlos at the moment other than that he’s a hugely talented young midfielder who’s done really well for us and has attracted interest from some of the biggest clubs in the world now for a couple of years.”
