Michael Carrick has explained why Patrick Dorgu has not featured at left-back for Manchester United so far, while making it clear that he still sees the Denmark international as a player who can fill the position.
Patrick Dorgu has been used upfront on the left side since Michael Carrick took charge, but the United boss does not believe that means the defender cannot play at left-back.
“He can certainly play there, he has done. I am not sitting here saying he can’t do that, it is just the way we have been since I have been here.”
Carrick also pointed out that Dorgu had limited involvement with Manchester United last season, making his impact so far even more encouraging.
Patrick Dorgu is a new signing
“He only played three or four times for us last season, so for me he is almost like a new signing, he has added so much to the group.”
The manager also highlighted Dorgu’s versatility. The young player has featured on the right for Denmark and even scored from that position during the summer.
“He has played off the right for Denmark, he scored a great goal this summer.”
Carrick believes Dorgu’s age and natural attributes give United plenty to work with. Rather than worrying about sticking him in one position, the priority is finding the best way to use his talents.
“There are times in training when he does it, being such a young age and having the attributes he has got, we have got to get the best from him.”
For now, Dorgu’s role may be to play upfront or at left-back, but Carrick clearly sees his adaptability as an asset rather than a problem.
