The fallout between JJ Gabriel and Manchester United reportedly began after the teenager’s representatives demanded guaranteed playing time before scholarship talks could begin.
According to ESPN, Gabriel’s camp told Manchester United that the 15-year-old should receive at least 20 minutes against Sabah FK, Brighton and Bournemouth before discussions over a scholarship agreement could take place.
The request came before Gabriel turned 16, when he was eligible to sign a pre-agreement with the club. It was not a fresh demand, but part of the dispute that ultimately led to the breakdown between the player and United.
JJ Gabriel was expected to make his first-team debut against Brighton in the Carabao Cup, but the disagreement over his playing time escalated. His representatives subsequently asked United to cancel his registration, and Gabriel has not trained with the club since September 16.
Why the JJ Gabriel dispute became serious
Gabriel’s representatives reportedly believe promises made by United were not fulfilled, while the club are increasingly preparing for the possibility of losing one of their brightest academy prospects.
The teenager turns 16 on October 6, potentially opening the door to a move elsewhere. Barcelona and Real Madrid have both been linked, while other major European clubs have also monitored his situation.
United are understood to be considering legal action if there is evidence that another club or an agent has approached JJ Gabriel outside the regulations governing young players.
The central issue, though, remains the disagreement over playing time. Gabriel’s representatives wanted a clear pathway to first-team minutes before entering scholarship negotiations, while United were not prepared to guarantee those appearances.
That disagreement eventually became the reason for the relationship breaking down.
