Leny Yoro has received his first senior France call-up after Manchester United’s young centre-back was added to Zinédine Zidane’s squad at the last minute.
The French Football Federation confirmed that the 20-year-old has replaced Real Madrid defender Ibrahima Konate, who withdrew after suffering a minor right knee sprain in training.
Leny Yoro was already with France’s youth setup, after being selected by Under-21 manager Gérald Baticle. The late change has now allowed the Manchester United defender to step up to the senior squad for the first time.
The call-up is another notable moment in Yoro’s development since his move to Manchester United. He will now work under Zidane as France prepare for their next four Nations League fixtures against Turkey, Belgium and Italy.
Yoro steps up from France Under-21s
Yoro’s promotion comes as Konaté was ruled out of France’s upcoming Nations League matches because of his knee problem. Zidane subsequently selected the United defender as his replacement in the 23-man squad.
The French FA described Yoro as receiving his “first senior France call-up”, marking a significant step for the centre-back at just 20 years old.
He is also the seventh player to receive a maiden France call-up since Zidane took charge of the national team.
Having already been at Clairefontaine with the Under-21 group, Yoro will not have to make a separate journey to join the senior setup. Instead, he can immediately begin working alongside the senior squad.
The opportunity also gives the Manchester United defender a chance to impress Zidane ahead of four important Nations League fixtures.
