Jamie Carragher believes Manchester United should resist the temptation to sack Michael Carrick despite the manager coming under increasing pressure after a poor start to the season.
Manchester United have won only one of their opening five Premier League matches and were knocked out of the EFL Cup by Brighton at Old Trafford. Reports have also linked the club with potential replacements, including Antonio Conte. Our earlier report states that United have held an initial contact with him as well.
Carragher, though, believes changing manager now would be another mistake for United.
“I think it would be ludicrous to get rid of Michael Carrick,” Carragher said on The Overlap. “In my mind, I don’t see Michael Carrick as the Man United manager. I feel like he’s in there doing a job for the club to get them through a rocky period and then almost to pass on the baton.”
Carragher wants United to keep Michael Carrick calm
The former Liverpool defender feels Carrick’s biggest achievement was bringing stability to a club that had become used to managerial changes.
“Man United needed calm; they needed it to not be a circus and not to be the banter club. He did that amazingly,” Carragher said.
Carrick initially took charge on an interim basis last season and guided United into the Champions League before being appointed permanently during the summer.
“They need another season of just making it straight in the Champions League,” he added. “And then it would be the case of [getting] one of the top managers about who could manage a club of that level.”
“I don’t like the idea of changing Michael Carrick now or in the next international break – it just needs to be relaxed.”
