Manchester United have carried out an internal assessment into potential financial losses they believe could be linked to Manchester City’s alleged breaches of Premier League financial regulations.
The Athletic reported that an independent disciplinary panel had found City guilty of all but one of the 115 charges brought against the club, according to sources familiar with the matter.
The Premier League referred City to an independent commission over alleged financial rule breaches between 2009 and 2018. The club were also accused of failing to cooperate with investigations between the 2018-19 and 2022-23 seasons.
Manchester United are now among the clubs examining what the case could mean for their own finances and sporting results. According to sources familiar with the process, the assessment at Old Trafford has concentrated mainly on seasons when United were directly affected by City’s position in the Premier League.
Manchester United finished second to Manchester City in key seasons
United finished runners-up to Manchester City in the 2011-12 season under Sir Alex Ferguson, with the title famously decided by Sergio Aguero’s stoppage-time goal against Queens Park Rangers on the final day.
The Reds were also second to City in 2017-18, when Jose Mourinho was in charge, while Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side finished behind their local rivals again in 2020-21.
The internal review does not itself mean United will pursue compensation, but it shows the club are examining the possible financial impact of the case.
Any action would depend on how the findings develop and whether United can establish that they suffered a direct financial loss as a result.
