Manchester United’s latest headlines have a bit of everything: Wayne Rooney discussing his son Kai’s future, Bruno Fernandes picking up an injury concern on international duty, and another update in the JJ Gabriel saga. There is also a fresh link involving Barcelona’s Alejandro Balde, while Shea Lacey has picked up a first club award after his breakthrough goal against Brighton.
Here are the main Manchester United news & talking points from September 27.
Wayne Rooney makes stance clear on Kai
Wayne Rooney does not want his son Kai to receive opportunities at Manchester United because of the family name. In our full Wayne Rooney story, the former United captain explained that Kai must earn his scholarship and any future contract on his own merit.
Kai has been at United since he was 11 and now features for the Under-18s. Rooney also pointed to similarities between his son and himself, particularly the youngster’s left foot and desire to score. Kai signed his scholarship deal in July.
Mourinho revives the 2017-18 title debate
Jose Mourinho’s old comments about Manchester City’s 2017-18 title have resurfaced as the club’s financial case continues. In our Mourinho story, Mourinho previously joked that United could still win that league and that City would then have to pay him the bonus and give him the medal.
The report looks at whether a Premier League title could ever be stripped retrospectively. It notes little appetite for such a move among Premier League clubs, while previous examples from Juventus and Elgin City show that title revocation has happened before. Any punishment remains a matter for the independent process.
Mata asks what a title could mean for him
Juan Mata has questioned whether he could eventually be regarded as a Premier League title winner because of the ongoing Manchester City case. In our full Juan Mata report, the former United midfielder responded to Rodri’s comments about titles being won on the pitch.
Mata spent eight years at Old Trafford without winning the league, while City collected six titles during that period. His comments stop short of claiming United should receive a title, but raise questions over the historical record.
Fernandes ruled out of Norway game
Bruno Fernandes will not play for Portugal against Norway after picking up an injury. In our Bruno Fernandes injury report, Portugal boss Jorge Jesus said Fernandes has been playing with pain in recent matches and that the issue affected his display against Wales.
Jesus said Portugal did not want to take another risk and preferred to have the midfielder fully fit for the next game. United are already dealing with several other injury concerns.
United keep watch on Alejandro Balde
Manchester United are monitoring Barcelona left-back Alejandro Balde ahead of January. As reported in our Alejandro Balde story, Mundo Deportivo claims United’s interest remains strong, although there has been no suggestion that a deal is close or that talks have started.
The 22-year-old has been linked with United previously and could leave Barcelona in January. Balde would offer another option at left-back.
Shea Lacey wins Goal of the Month
Shea Lacey has won Manchester United’s September Goal of the Month award after his strike against Brighton. In our full Shea Lacey story, the academy graduate received 73 per cent of the fan vote.
Lacey cut inside from the right before firing into the near corner during his first senior start at Old Trafford. Bryan Mbeumo’s goal against Everton finished second with 13 per cent.
United continue efforts to keep JJ Gabriel
Manchester United are still trying to convince JJ Gabriel to remain at the club, although there has been little movement with his camp. In our latest JJ Gabriel report, the youngster can sign a scholarship deal when he turns 16 on October 6 and, because he holds an EU passport, will also have the option of moving abroad.
Chelsea are reportedly the main English club interested, while Real Madrid and Barcelona have held talks. Spain is described as the most likely destination, with Bayern Munich, Borussia Dortmund, RB Leipzig and Paris Saint-Germain also having contact with Gabriel’s representatives. United’s priority remains keeping him.
