Shea Lacey wins Manchester United Goal of the Month award after Brighton strike

Manchester United academy graduate Shea Lacey has won the club’s Goal of the Month award for September after his impressive finish against Brighton & Hove Albion.

The 19-year-old marked his first senior start at Old Trafford with his maiden first-team goal, producing a moment to remember despite Manchester United eventually suffering a 3-2 defeat.

Shea Lacey received the ball on the right before cutting inside under pressure from Jaouen Hadjam. The forward created enough space for a shot and fired the ball into the near corner, catching the goalkeeper by surprise.

“It’s a superb strike,” commentator Webber said during the match.

“Everyone’s expecting it into the far post and he reverses it into the near post. Keeper’s got absolutely no chance. What a moment for the young man.”

The goal proved popular with United supporters and won the club’s fan-voted poll by a clear margin.

Shea Lacey edges Mbeumo to claim monthly award

Bryan Mbeumo finished closest behind Lacey after scoring his second goal of the season against Everton.

For Lacey, the award caps an important period in his development. He featured regularly during pre-season before being handed his first start in the EFL Cup third-round meeting with Brighton earlier in September.

The youngster had made his senior debut under former head coach Ruben Amorim but then endured a difficult spell without another appearance. He was also sent off in an FA Cup defeat to Brighton in January before an injury kept him out following Michael Carrick’s arrival.

His breakthrough season has now taken another step forward, with his first senior goal and a club award arriving in the same month.
