Manchester United must give Harry Amass a real chance before making a decision

Manchester United should think twice before considering a sale of Harry Amass. The youngster cannot fairly be judged if he is rarely given enough time on the pitch to show what he can do.

Harry Amass is still only 19 and remains part of United’s first team after missing out on a transfer this summer. He made his senior debut against Leicester City in March 2025, but his path into regular first-team football has remained difficult.

That is exactly why the current situation deserves some patience. A young defender needs mistakes, difficult games and a run of matches to learn at senior level. A few substitute appearances are not enough evidence to decide whether he can succeed at Old Trafford.

In the latest development, Samuel Luckhurst has revealed that Manchester United could sell Harry Amass if he fails to prove himself this season.

Amass could be another James Garner situation

Manchester United have seen this before with James Garner. The midfielder eventually left the club and established himself at Everton, where his performances earned him an England senior call-up in 2026.

That does not mean Amass will follow the same path, but it should make United cautious.

The timing also matters. With Patrick Dorgu currently dealing with an injury, there is a natural opportunity to give Amass more responsibility. Luke Shaw is also out with an injury and gives Amass a chance to impress Michael Carrick. However, the big question is if Michael Carrick will trust him as he has previously used Diogo Dalot on the left back position as well.

So before United decide Amass cannot make the grade, give him a proper run. Let him play, make mistakes and respond to them. At that point, there will be a much clearer basis for deciding his future.
