Paul Scholes breaks silence on Manchester City medals after financial case

Paul Scholes has given his view on whether Manchester United should receive Premier League medals if Manchester City are stripped of titles following their financial case.

The former Manchester United midfielder was asked about the possibility on The Good, The Bad and The Football podcast and admitted there is little clear precedent for what could happen to trophies already won.

“As far as getting medals and taking trophies off them, there’s no real precedent been set for this, has it?” Scholes said.

When told that trophies could not simply be taken away, Paul Scholes disagreed and pointed to Juventus as an example.

“Of course, you can. It happened to Juventus,” he replied.

Scholes then stressed that any proven financial wrongdoing should carry a serious sporting punishment.

“If you cheated, you have got to have serious punishment,” he added.

Scholes agrees with Rooney on retrospective medals

Interestingly, Scholes stopped short of saying former runners-up should simply receive the trophies.

“No, no, I am saying that (they should give the trophies to the runners-up), I am not saying that,” he clarified.

“I’m not saying that I won a medal, do you know what I mean? There would still be something wrong about that.”

His comments echo those of Wayne Rooney, who has also rejected the idea of Manchester United accepting a retrospective Premier League medal from the 2011/12 season.

Rooney said he would not feel comfortable receiving a title for finishing second because United “didn’t do enough that season to win the league.”

Both former United stars have therefore made a similar distinction. They want punishment for City to be severe, but that does not automatically mean United should inherit their trophies.
