Former Manchester United defender Marcos Rojo has refused to train with Racing Club as he pushes for a return to boyhood club Estudiantes.
The 36-year-old joined Racing in August 2025, but his time at the club now appears to be heading towards an uncomfortable ending. Marcos Rojo is understood to be keen on finishing his career back at Estudiantes, where he began his professional journey.
Rojo determined to return to Estudiantes
Rojo started his career with Estudiantes and helped the club win the Copa Libertadores in 2009 and the Primera Division the following year. His performances eventually earned him a move to Europe and, after spells in Russia and Portugal, Manchester United brought him to Old Trafford from Sporting CP for £16million in August 2014.
The left-footed defender spent six-and-a-half years with Manchester United, although injuries regularly disrupted his time at the club. He made 122 appearances, including 76 in the Premier League, and won the FA Cup in 2016 before adding the League Cup and Europa League a year later.
Rojo later returned to Estudiantes on loan from United in 2020 and now wants to make the move permanent at the end of his career.
Estudiantes have reportedly made contact with the defender, with former United midfielder Juan Sebastian Veron now serving as the club’s chairman.
Rojo also held talks with Racing chairman Diego Milito on Tuesday about his future. The meeting became heated after neither side changed their position.
With Rojo continuing to push for an exit, his decision to stop training has taken the dispute into a new phase. The defender appears determined to force the move he wants.
