Manchester United’s Kai Rooney and the dance that changed it

Kai Rooney came close to a very different career. His mother, Coleen Rooney, says the Manchester United academy player might have ended up dancing instead of playing football.

Speaking in a recent conversation with Hits Radio, Coleen explained that dancing once sat alongside Kai’s early football life. The two clashed on the same day, and he had to choose.

Hip-Hop at Old Trafford is the Kai Rooney dream

According to Coleen Rooney, Kai loved dancing as a boy. He was part of an all-boys hip-hop dance group. Training for both activities fell on the same day, she said, so he had to choose between dancing and football.

Coleen also remembers a moment on the pitch that captured both sides of her son at once. She recalled:

“One time, he was in goal, I just looked around, and he had one glove on, doing the Michael Jackson dance in goal.”

The sight left her briefly questioning his focus. She admitted wondering, “Why? Is he wasting my time?” A coach then stepped in with some reassurance.

The coach’s advice was simple, as Coleen remembers it: “As long as he enjoys his time here, just keep bringing him. It’s fine.” She has looked back on that guidance fondly. “And look how it’s turned out now,” she told listeners. The fuller exchange appears in the original interview report.

Kai Rooney climbing up the Manchester United ranks

Away from the dancing stories, the football facts are simple. Kai Rooney is 16 and plays for Manchester United’s Under-18s. He returned to the club’s academy at the age of 11.

Kai has recently signed a first-year scholarship with United. The deal lets him continue his education while he keeps developing as a footballer. Wayne Rooney has separately described Kai as having a long-term contract with the club.

The scholarship news is covered in more depth in our scholarship report, and the wider family picture is set out in the family academy update.

Wayne Rooney is United’s record goalscorer and a 16-time trophy winner at the club. He has spoken proudly about his son’s progress, without claiming any credit for pushing him there.

“I’m so proud watching him. We’ve never pushed him to go into football, it’s what he wants to do,” he said.

Wayne also drew a clear line between his own upbringing and Kai’s.

“I grew up in a council estate in Liverpool with that desire and hunger to become a footballer,” he said. He added: “He’s grown up in a different area and a different time, a bit more privileged with what we can give him.”

On the football side specifically, Wayne said: “And he’s done well, he’s got a long term contract with the club.”

Kai’s progress has not been without setbacks. An injury towards the end of last season kept him out of United’s FA Youth Cup final, which the club lost to local rivals Manchester City.

What is the future for Kai Rooney at Man Utd

The next marker on Kai Rooney’s pathway is clear. He becomes eligible to sign a professional deal once he turns 17. That is usually the point when United’s academy prospects learn whether they have a longer-term future at the club.

Kai has spoken of wanting to reach United’s first team one day and follow his father’s path at Old Trafford. Wayne remains the club’s all-time leading scorer and a 16-time trophy winner there. Nothing about that outcome is guaranteed at this stage. The scholarship covers only what it says: education and continued development, not a promise of senior football.

United’s academy has guided young players through this exact scholarship route many times before, as our academy feature explores.

For now, the Rooney name carries extra weight around Carrington. The scholarship is only the first step on a path that still has to be earned.
