National media comes to Senne Lammens’ defence after Paul Scholes criticism

Senne Lammens has received a strong response from the Belgian media after producing an excellent performance for Belgium against Turkey, just days after facing criticism from Manchester United legend Paul Scholes.

The goalkeeper kept a clean sheet in Belgium’s 3-0 Nations League victory on Friday and made several important saves to help Mark van Bommel’s side secure a comfortable result.

Lammens had previously insisted that he needed to remain mentally strong after Paul Scholes questioned whether he had done enough to prove himself as a top-class goalkeeper at Manchester United.

Lammens answers Scholes criticism on the pitch

“You have to be mentally strong and self-confident in the face of all those people who express their opinions,” Lammens said before the Turkey game, as quoted by the Manchester Evening News.

He backed those words up with his performance. Het Nieuwsblad praised the Manchester United goalkeeper, noting that he had shown again why he deserves the trust of the national coach and had dealt with everything required of him.

Het Laatste Nieuws gave Lammens a 7/10 rating and highlighted his composure, including an excellent late save from a free-kick.

Voetbal Primeur went further, handing him an 8/10 and describing it as another excellent display. The outlet said Lammens was there whenever Belgium needed him and had justified the confidence placed in him.

The performance is a timely boost for the 24-year-old, who has not yet kept a Premier League clean sheet for United this season.

Senne Lammens joined United from Royal Antwerp for an initial £18.2million and kept eight clean sheets in 32 Premier League appearances during his first campaign.

After the criticism, he has now delivered his answer where it matters most. He would be hoping to bring the same form when he returns to United to face Tottenham.
