Bruno Fernandes backs Cristiano Ronaldo after Portugal fallout

Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes has backed Cristiano Ronaldo after the Al-Nassr forward left the Portugal camp during the latest Nations League campaign.

Ronaldo’s decision came after he was left on the bench for Portugal’s 2-1 victory over Norway. The 41-year-old was an unused substitute, marking an unusual moment in his international career and quickly leading to questions over his future with the national team.

Bruno Fernandes has since spoken directly with Cristiano Ronaldo and made it clear where he stands on the veteran striker’s importance to Portugal.

Bruno Fernandes defends Portugal icon, Ronaldo

“I spoke with Cristiano and told him that he is and will always remain the GREATEST icon of our national team and our country,” Fernandes said, as quoted by GOAL.

The Manchester United captain also insisted that Portugal’s squad remains united despite the situation surrounding Ronaldo.

“Our national team is united, not divided. Matters must be resolved internally and conclude well for both parties,” he added.

Ronaldo had reportedly held talks with head coach Jorge Jesus and senior figures within the Portuguese Football Federation after the Norway game. Those discussions did not prevent him from leaving the camp.

The situation has now put fresh attention on Ronaldo’s international future, with the forward having made 234 appearances for Portugal.

Fernandes, though, believes the focus is on protecting the unity of the national team while making sure Ronaldo’s status is respected. His comments also show the close relationship between the two Manchester United figures, despite Ronaldo’s international career now entering an uncertain period.

While Ronaldo’s return for Portugal’s next fixtures remains unlikely, Bruno Fernandes has made his position on the country’s record-breaking star very clear.
