Paul Scholes has made his feelings pretty clear. If Manchester City are stripped of the Premier League title they won in 2011/12, he wants his medal.
The former midfielder took a very different view to Wayne Rooney, who recently said he would feel uncomfortable accepting a title after United finished second that season.
Paul Scholes, though, is not interested in turning down the recognition.
Speaking on Instagram and as quoted by The Metro, he responded to former teammates who have said they want City’s trophies removed but would not want the medals for themselves.
“Keep hearing ex-teammates saying they want trophies taking off them, but they don’t want their medals… f*** that I’m a greedy b**** I want my medal,” Scholes wrote.
Scholes disagrees with Rooney over 2012 title
The split between the two former United players is interesting given they were part of the same title race.
Manchester United finished level on points with City in 2011/12, but Roberto Mancini’s side took the trophy after Sergio Aguero’s dramatic stoppage-time winner against QPR on the final day.
The financial case has now reopened the debate over what should happen to City’s honours from the period in question.
The independent commission verdict states that City were found guilty of arranging “sham contracts” and disguising more than £830million in funding between 2009 and 2018. City continue to contest the findings and maintain their innocence.
Wayne Rooney believes United should not inherit a title they did not win on the pitch. Scholes sees it differently.
And, unlike Rooney, he has no hesitation about taking the medal if it ever comes his way.
