Michael Carrick has admitted Manchester United are still trying to establish how long Benjamin Sesko will be out with his troublesome shin injury, with surgery not ruled out as the club searches for a solution.
Benjamin Sesko has been unavailable since coming off in the second half of United’s Carabao Cup defeat to Brighton on September 16. The Slovenian striker will also miss Saturday’s Premier League meeting with Tottenham Hotspur, leaving Carrick short of another attacking option.
The latest Benjamin Sesko injury update suggests the problem has returned in a similar area, although Carrick stressed it is not the same injury Sesko suffered previously.
Carrick explains Sesko’s recurring shin problem
Speaking ahead of the Tottenham game, Carrick said United were still working to understand the issue and determine when the striker could return.
“It’s not the exact issue, it’s a similar area, but it’s not the exact same thing again,” Carrick explained during his press conference.
“And we’re kind of still working through it a little bit to see how long the issue will be. We’re hoping that it’ll be soon, obviously, but at this moment it’s still not quite clear.”
The United manager also suggested Sesko had initially responded well to treatment, making the latest setback particularly frustrating for the club.
“There’s different things to look at. I think he recovered really well actually from the initial one, and there was a lot of time, and sometimes things get thrown up, the body does certain things and we’ve got to react to that and try and get him back as quick as we can.”
Manchester United yet to rule out surgery
United have not ruled out surgery as they consider the best way to resolve Sesko’s ongoing shin problem. However, Carrick’s comments suggest the club is still assessing the situation, with no clear return date set.
The 22-year-old’s absence comes at a difficult time for United, who need consistency in attack after a difficult opening to the season. Sesko’s availability would give Michael Carrick another option through the middle, but the club will not want to rush him back before properly addressing the problem.
