United considering Old Trafford expansion

Manchester United are considering expanding the capacity of the club’s Old Trafford stadium, according to Andy Mitten of ESPN.

Old Trafford’s current capacity stands at 75,635, but that figure could be reduced by as many as 3,000 seats due to new disabled seating regulations.

That would still leave Old Trafford as the highest capacity club stadium in England, and over 10,000 seats larger than Arsenal’s Emirates Stadium.

However, plans have apparently been made to add a second tier to the South stand of the stadium, which would add an extra 7,500 seats to Old Trafford’s capacity.

With the new disabled seating regulations in mind, that increase would see Old Trafford house about 80,000 fans.

It is suggested that the redevelopment work would begin in the summer of 2017- 11 years on from the completion of Old Trafford’s most recent expansion, which saw the capacity increased from 68,000 to almost 76,000 at a cost of £42 million.

This news comes just before the South stand is set for further change this weekend, when it will be renamed after the club’s second highest appearance maker, Sir Bobby Charlton. The change is set to be unveiled before Sunday’s home match against Everton in the Premier League.
