- Manchester United are still interested in PSG manager
- An admirer in the club
- Could find his way to Old Trafford next summer.
Football journalist Fabrizio Romano has confirmed that Manchester United still hold an interest in Luis Enrique, with the Spaniard retaining a high-profile admirer within the club.
Whilst Enrique coming in remains unlikely, he still sits high on United’s shortlist and continues to earn strong backing from figures inside the club.
Manchester United will assess potential alternatives to Michael Carrick, while also keeping their options open in case the final seven games of the season unravel.
Enrique Still a Possibility?
Romano gave an update on United’s interest in Enrique and suggested that there is still one individual eager to appoint him. He said on his YouTube channel:
“There’s someone at Man Utd who is a big, big fan of Luis Enrique. There’s some truth in the reports from 2-3 months ago that some people at United think he may one day become Man Utd’s manager, but nothing more than this for now.“
He added:
“At the moment the focus of Luis Enrique is on Paris Saint-Germain, and negotiating his contract with them. Manchester United are also very happy with the work done by Michael Carrick so far.”
The Spaniard has long harboured ambitions to manage in the Premier League, and the opportunity appeared to be aligning when United dismissed Portuguese coach Ruben Amorim just days before Enrique reportedly turned down a contract extension at PSG.
Enrique dismissed rumours over him possibly departing the Parc des Princes in a press conference, saying, “Discussions are normal, but they remain confidential.”
As two months ticked by, fans grew increasingly anxious, frustrated by the lack of progress and the uncertainty surrounding his future.
Previous reports claimed that Enrique will sign a new deal with Paris Saint-Germain beyond his current contract, which expires in 2027.
The signing of Spanish wonder-kid Dro Fernandez seems to have sweetened the deal. With a host of Europe’s top clubs circling the 18‑year‑old, Enrique had been desperate to land the midfielder before anyone else could.
PSG president Nasser Al‑Khelaifi, balancing travel between Paris and the Middle East amid the ongoing tensions in the Middle East, opened the club’s chequebook and spent €8.2 million to secure the youngster.
With the youngster signed, Enrique now believes that PSG are fully behind his long-term plan for the club and that he has no reason to leave.
Enrique or Carrick?
With Carrick delivering an exceptional start to his interim reign, the club has made no approaches to external candidates, unwilling to disrupt the momentum he has already built.
Manchester United will delay their decision until the end of the season, by which point Luis Enrique will likely have signed an extension. It seems that as time marches on, United will look internally for their next full-time head coach rather than externally.
Carrick’s interim stint has impressed the higher-ups, with it now seemingly likely that United will qualify for next season’s Champions League.
If the Englishman delivers a strong end to the season, Manchester United will most likely offer him a full-time role.
