  • Maguire makes bold statement about next season
  • Call for good signings this summer
  • Players laying foundation this season

Manchester United defender Harry Maguire signed a new one-year contract this week, extending his stay at Old Trafford. The Englishman has now made a bold prediction about the club’s future.

The centre-back arrived in 2019 for a world record £80 million fee for a defender and has been a key figure at the club since, despite the change in manager.

The 33-year-old’s new deal includes an option for another season, and he has been talking to the club’s media team during their training camp in Dublin.

Maguire Predicts Special Season at Old Trafford

Maguire believes that the Manchester United players are laying the foundation for next season. He said the matches under Michael Carrick have shown the squad is good and they just need the right additions in the summer to take it to the next level:

“I feel like we’re in a good place at the moment. I believe we’re in a forward curve with the club, and I want to be part of that. I want to leave the club in a good place, when I do leave the club, and that’s the most important thing. It’s not about me, it’s not about individuals.”

Maguire added:

“I feel like next season could be a special year, if we carry on working hard, if we recruit well in the summer. It’s a big summer ahead, but like I said, focus on this year to make sure we’re in a good position for next year and then make next year a special year.”

The Englishman has played 266 matches since joining from Leicester City and captained the Red Devils in 124 matches from January 2020 to July 2023, when he was stripped of the armband by Erik ten Hag.

Maguire Eyeing More Silverware

Maguire has won just two winners’ medals since joining Manchester United, the Carabao Cup in 2022/23 and the FA Cup in 2023/24. The Englishman has finished as runners-up in the FA Cup once, and in the UEFA Europa League in 2020/21 and 2024/25.

The defender was linked with a move to Inter Miami at the end of the current season, but he has now put an end to speculation by signing a new deal. He came close to joining West Ham United in 2023 after falling out of favor under Ten Hag, but eventually the move fell through.

The former Leicester City man is suspended for the upcoming Premier League match against Leeds United on Monday, April 13, after getting sent off in the 2-2 draw to AFC Bournemouth in March.
