- Maguire signed new deal with Manchester United on Tuesday
- Interest from Napoli and Inter Miami was reported
- Defender wants to retire at Old Trafford
Seven years in, Harry Maguire has had a rollercoaster of a ride as a Manchester United player.
Joining the club from Leicester City in 2019 for a £80m fee, the pressure was on from his very first day. He was stripped of the club captaincy in 2023 by Erik ten Hag, and the Dutchman was willing to let him leave West Ham United in the same summer. Maguire refused, opting to fight for his place.
At times, he was subject to his own fans booing him for both club and country. However, he has shown professionalism throughout the turbulence. It even included being arrested in 2020 by Greek authorities during a family holiday.
His resurgence comes at a crucial time for the club, as they consider a squad overhaul. One name that will not be on the departure list is Maguire’s. The 33-year-old signed a new one-year contract on Tuesday, with the option of a further year.
Maguire Ignored Interest to Stay at Old Trafford
According to The Sun, Maguire has snubbed the chance to join Sir David Beckham’s Inter Miami by putting pen to paper on a new deal.
The Red Devils legend acquired superstar Lionel Messi in 2013 for the MLS side, winning the MLS Cup in 2025. It has now been revealed that Maguire rejected the chance to play with the Argentinian in favour of a stay at United.
His contract was due to expire in the summer. Since January, the centre-back has been free to speak to other clubs.
Moreover, the England international has outlined his intentions to retire at Old Trafford, which is welcome news. The club are set to lose senior experience in Casemiro this summer, which has forced the need for senior heads like Maguire to stay.
In his official statement on the club website, Maguire said: “I am delighted to extend my journey at this incredible club to at least eight seasons and continue to play in front of our special supporters to create more amazing moments together.
“You can feel the ambition and potential of this exciting squad. The determination throughout the whole club to fight for major trophies is clear for everyone to see, and I am confident that our best moments together remain ahead of us.”
The defender was also subject to interest from Italy, with current champions Napoli keen on signing him for free.
Good Times Ahead
The last few weeks have been good to Harry Maguire. He recently earned a recall to Thomas Tuchel’s England side after being snubbed by the German during the qualifiers. The call-up renews optimism that he will be on the plane to North America – despite being labelled ‘fifth choice’ by the German.
Speaking before his appearances against Uruguay and Japan, he said: “When you don’t get picked, when you’ve been a regular for six or seven years, it’s tough. I spoke to the manager, and he told me I was in. I phoned my family. My mum was on holiday, and she was crying.”
In his own right, Maguire is a throwback to footballers of the golden days. United can count themselves proud that even in the darkest days, they have had him playing for them. His mental resilience is unmatched.
At 33, United may be getting the twilight years of Maguire, but it is one less problem to think about. Injuries have disrupted his rhythm at times in the last few years, but he has proven to become a pivotal figure under Michael Carrick this season.
