- Manchester United legend Teddy Sheringham tips Leeds to be relegated
- The two sides will face each other next Monday
- ‘Leeds need goals’
Manchester United legend Teddy Sheringham has tipped Leeds United to face the drop this season. With a huge match next for both sides, Leeds will travel to Manchester to face the Red Devils on April 13.
Sheringham made over 150 appearances for United, scoring 46 goals in the process. And while that return may look modest, his 91st-minute equaliser in the 1999 UEFA Champions League Final 1999 remains more than enough to define his legacy.
Both Leeds and Manchester United will push for a big win on Monday, not only to boost their respective league positions, but also to get one over their rivals.
Sheringham’s prediction

Sheringham was asked who he tips to go down out of West Ham, Spurs and Forest, to which the former England international gave an interesting answer. He said (via The Leeds Press):
“I have to say Leeds! They’re all my former clubs, so I don’t want to see any of them go down. I’ve still got a soft spot for all of them. Obviously, Tottenham and West Ham are the ones I’d want to stay up, so if you’re pushing me, I’d say Forest — but I still think Leeds have as good a chance as all of them.
He added:
“They’re all very similar. I wouldn’t want to put my house on any of them staying up. At this stage, it’s all about scoring goals. Who’s got the potential to score more? At the moment, none of them are convincing in that respect.”
Sheringham continued:
“With seven games to go, you probably need nine points. To do that, you might need nine or ten goals. Are you going to get that from any of those teams? I don’t think so. So whoever can’t score, or keeps missing chances when they come, is going to come unstuck.”
As it stands, Leeds sit precariously perched just four points above the drop zone. With seven games left of the season, it would not be impossible to see them get sucked into the drop zone, with West Ham, Tottenham, and Nottingham Forest all also fighting relegation.
Monday’s Match
Both sides have a lot to fight for. Whilst Manchester United are in the hot seat to reclaim UEFA Champions League football, they still have seven matches remaining—none of them easy.
The three biggest fixtures are the upcoming clash against rivals Leeds, followed by matches against fellow Champions League chasers Liverpool and Chelsea.
They have the chance to complete the double on both sides, with their last time achieving that against Liverpool in 2016 and against Chelsea in 2020.
On the flip side, Leeds United will be eyeing up their matches against Burnley, Wolverhampton Wanderers, Tottenham Hotspur, and West Ham United.
Whilst fighting a relegation battle, they must also prepare for an FA Cup semi-final clash against Chelsea—with the shadow of the infamous 1970 FA Cup Final lingering in the air.
