Manchester United icon Wayne Rooney has offered his verdict on the club’s resurgence under Michael Carrick, following a turbulent 14-month spell under Ruben Amorim.

Since Carrick’s appointment on January 13, United’s trajectory has shifted with real conviction. Ten games have yielded seven wins, two draws, and just a solitary defeat.

The Reds have transitioned from tentative top-four hopefuls into a side firmly entrenched in third, now looking one of the most credible contenders to secure qualification for the UEFA Champions League—a stage they have not graced since 2023.

Beyond results, the underlying details paint an even sharper picture of progression. Under Amorim, United managed just two clean sheets across 20 Premier League fixtures.

Carrick, on the other hand, has overseen an immediate defensive recalibration. In his opening six matches alone, goalkeeper Senne Lammens recorded three clean sheets—doubling the club’s previous tally for the campaign—with one of those shutouts arriving against rivals Manchester City.

Simple is the way to go

Rooney discussed Carrick and the upturn in form since he replaced Amorim as coach. He said on The Wayne Rooney Show:

“Michael’s character has simplified it. I think with Amorim, the shape and different rotations, and there were big gaps everywhere. United were easy to play against.”

Rooney added:

“I think Michael’s simplified it. It’s football, I’ve tried the management, but football is not that difficult in terms of it hasn’t changed that much – you know, since it was created.”

Carrick now has his next significant test at home to Leeds United. When the two sides met at Elland Road in January, they settled on a 1-1 draw.

That proved to be Amorim’s last game in charge before he was sacked and Carrick replaced him. The Englishman will be eager to guide his Reds to victory as they look to solidify their UEFA Champions League place while leaving Leeds perched precariously on a relegation knife-edge.

Can United Reclaim Champions League Football?

Whilst Manchester United are in the hot seat to reclaim UEFA Champions League football, they still have seven matches remaining—none of them easy.

The three biggest fixtures are the upcoming clash against rivals Leeds United, followed by matches against fellow Champions League chasers Liverpool and Chelsea.

They have the chance to complete the double on both sides, with their last time achieving that against Liverpool in 2016 and against Chelsea in 2020.
