- Senne Lammens keeps clean sheet for Manchester United in 1-0 victory
- Goalkeeper praises away fans for “special” support
- Belgian has kept six league clean sheets in debut season
Manchester United’s hard-fought 1-0 victory over Chelsea at Stamford Bridge was defined by a top-notch defensive display. A makeshift centreback pairing of Noussair Mazraoui and Ayden Heaven started shakily, but grew into the game.
At times, United were fortunate that Chelsea only hit the crossbar a few times in the second half. The three points were vital for the Red Devils’ third position in the league. The travelling support, who last saw the team on the road on 4 March in the 2-1 defeat to Newcastle, were vocal as ever.
In the heart of the defensive effort was goalkeeper Senne Lammens, who helped ensure a clean sheet at Stamford Bridge. The Belgian is always quick to steer plaudits away from himself, this time choosing to praise the fans instead.
Lammens Praises ‘Special’ Away Fans
Speaking to Steven Railston of Manchester Evening News (MEN) after the game, Lammens said: “At home it’s special, but it’s also always very special away, and you can feel the support of the supporters, especially in the first half when you’re playing in front of them.
“But also in the end, just the feeling with them and the way we can celebrate with them as well, coming here, and I mean, we had to fight for it. It wasn’t the prettiest, but that sometimes is the most beautiful thing.”
The goalkeeper was also full of praise for his teammate Bruno Fernandes. He said: “He [Fernandes] is very hard on himself and everybody else. That’s why maybe sometimes he can look a little bit frustrated when it’s not going our way.
“But that’s the way it has to be at this level. He wants to win Champions League’s and the Premier League. He tries to give us that as well and take us to his level.”
Lammens Rewarded with Rare Away Clean Sheet
Earlier in the season under Ruben Amorim, the Reds unwittingly broke a record for failing to keep a clean sheet away from home in 15 consecutive games. It took until 23 February under Michael Carrick for the squad to lift that curse.
That 1-0 victory over Everton marked Senne Lammens’ first shutout in United colours and the club’s first on the road since March 2025. While the Belgian currently sits 16th in the league’s clean sheet rankings for the 2025/26 season, the statistic is a harsh reflection of United’s collective defensive instability rather than his own ability.
Individually, the 23-year-old has been a revelation during a challenging debut season. Lammens has displaced Andre Onana as the number one beyond just this campaign. He has provided a calming presence between the posts that matches his personality. His latest clean sheet at Stamford Bridge was his best one yet, considering United were missing four senior centre-backs. It was a performance that solidified his rise from the unknown into a growing cult hero at Old Trafford.
