Mason Mount’s willingness to play deeper gives Michael Carrick a useful pre-season option. It should not become Manchester United’s long-term answer.
United have returned to Carrington with their midfield numbers severely reduced. Casemiro has left the club, while Manuel Ugarte faces a long recovery after suffering an anterior cruciate ligament injury at the World Cup.
Kobbie Mainoo remains away with England and may not return until United’s Dublin training camp in August. Carrick therefore needs somebody capable of providing structure during the opening weeks of pre-season.
According to The Sun, Mount is prepared to operate in a deeper position to help cover the shortage.
It is a sensible short-term move. Mount is fit, available and keen to secure a more important role after a difficult start to his United career.
Why Mount can help Carrick immediately
Mount has the mobility and discipline to play as one of two central midfielders during pre-season.
He presses with intensity, follows tactical instructions and moves the ball quickly. Those qualities can help Carrick maintain the tempo he wants while several midfielders remain absent.
Mount also finished last season with some momentum. He started the draw against Sunderland and the final-day victory at Brighton, offering energy and composure during United’s run-in.
His return to training gives Carrick an experienced player who already understands the demands of Premier League football. United have also decided against selling him despite interest from AC Milan, as ReadManUtd reported earlier this month.
A deeper role may also suit Mount better than constantly competing with Bruno Fernandes for the number 10 position.
Mount spent much of his best period at Chelsea playing as an advanced midfielder. However, his movement and passing range have always allowed him to drop into central areas.
United originally signed him with the idea that he could operate alongside Casemiro. Injuries prevented that plan from developing, but the tactical logic has not completely disappeared.
United still need a specialist midfielder
Mount can cover the position. He cannot provide everything United have lost.
Carrick needs a midfielder who can protect the defence, receive under pressure and control games from deep. Mount is more effective when he can move forward, press opponents and arrive around the penalty area.
Using him too defensively would remove some of his best qualities. It could also leave United vulnerable when they face stronger opposition or lose possession in central areas.
The proposed arrival of Andrey Santos should improve Carrick’s options. The Brazilian offers physical strength, ball-winning ability and the capacity to carry possession through midfield.
ReadManUtd has already examined how Santos could fit into the new midfield structure.
However, uncertainty remains around Éderson. United’s planned move for the Atalanta midfielder has encountered medical concerns, although club sources insist the deal has not been completely abandoned.
Carrick cannot begin the season with Mount, Mainoo and a new signing covering every central role. Ugarte’s injury has removed an important defensive option, while Casemiro’s departure leaves another gap in experience.
Mount now has a genuine opportunity
The situation still gives Mount a chance to reshape his United career.
His first three seasons at Old Trafford were disrupted by injuries and uncertainty over his best position. A strong summer could establish him as Carrick’s reliable all-purpose midfielder.
He does not need to become a permanent holding player. Instead, he can show that he is capable of helping United build attacks from deeper areas before moving forward when the space appears.
Mount’s versatility is valuable, particularly during a disrupted pre-season. It also explains why Carrick wants to keep him.
United must still complete their midfield rebuild. Mount can ease the immediate pressure, but asking him to solve the entire problem would repeat the mistakes that left the squad short in the first place.
