Manchester United: Patrick Dorgu Return Might Not Come vs Liverpool

  • Manchester United set to welcome Patrick Dorgu back
  • There have been hopes he’ll face Liverpool
  • More likely to return week after

Patrick Dorgu is close to returning to action, but Manchester United fans shouldn’t get their hopes up about him facing Liverpool. The Danish winger has been sidelined since January with a hamstring injury.

Michael Carrick spoke optimistically about Dorgu this week and was hopeful he would return to team training in the next week or so. It’s a huge boost for the Reds who are two wins away from Champions League qualification.

Dorgu isn’t available for United’s clash with Brentford on Monday (April 27th). But there have been hopes he might be fit to face Liverpool at home next Sunday (May 3rd).

When is Dorgu Expected Back?

Dorgu was hitting top form when Carrick replaced Ruben Amorim in January. He scored in a 2-0 win over Manchester City and a 3-2 victory away to Arsenal.

But in the win at the Emirates, he suffered a hamstring injury which prevented him from kicking on. Fortunately, Matheus Cunha has come to the fore on the left flank, bagging four goals and three assists in 12 games under Carrick.

Cunha can be expected to start against Liverpool, but suggestions that Dorgu could make the squad might be far-fetched. That’s according to Tyrone Marshall of Manchester Evening News, who said:

“Patrick Dorgu will be pushing hard to try and be in the squad to face Liverpool at the start of May. “In all likelihood, it might be that the game against Sunderland on May 9 is a more realistic return date for him.”

There might be less pressure on United handling Dorgu’s minutes carefully because Denmark failed to qualify for the World Cup. That doesn’t mean they shouldn’t be careful with their approach in easing him back into action.

Dorgu has appeared 24 times across competitions this season, posting three goals and as many assists. He will offer Carrick an option at left back aswell as on the left wing and even on the right.

Man United Still Need New Left Winger

Even with Dorgu’s return on the horizon, it’s clear that a new left winger should be on the cards this summer. The club appear to be keen to sign one and they have been linked with three in particular.

Morgan Rogers, Iliman Ndiaye and Yan Diomande are all thought to be on the Reds’ shortlist. Rogers seems to be a genuine target, and the Aston Villa man can play on the left as well as in attacking midfield.

The priority is strengthening in central midfield ahead of Casemiro’s departure. But bolstering out wide is needed, especially when situations such as Dorgu’s injury arise.
