- Fabrizio Romano has update on Rashford’s future at Manchester United
- Forward wants to remain in Catalan city
- Barcelona’s stance is still unclear despite buy option
The saga around Marcus Rashford and his future at Manchester United continues under a cloud of uncertainty.
The only thing certain so far is that the Reds are unwilling to be flexible on their current loan agreement. Barcelona have the option to buy the forward for £26m, but the Catalan giants are looking to negotiate a smaller fee. United’s unwillingness to do so has cast doubts on the player’s future in La Liga beyond this season.
Transfer guru Fabrizio Romano has provided the latest update on Rashford’s future ahead of his loan expiry.
Fabrizio Romano on Rashford’s Future
Romano was speaking on his YouTube channel to highlight the positive impact Marcus Rashford has had at Barcelona. The Italian shared his perspective on the player’s professionalism, stating: “Rashford has always been – let me say, that’s a personal opinion – fantastic this season in terms of behaviour. Sometimes it’s not easy to be on the bench for a player of Marcus Rashford’s stature.”
The journalist also praised Rashford’s integration into the squad as a key factor in his success within the dressing room. He highlighted the forward’s “positive attitude” toward both his teammates and manager Hansi Flick, who is reportedly “very happy” with the player. Flick is expected to remain in charge next season, particularly as his side needs only five more points to secure the league title.
Yet, club officials “are still not triggering” the buy option set by United at £26m. Barcelona reportedly deems the figure too high, even though personal terms are not expected to be a major hurdle in negotiations. Romano mentioned that Barcelona is “considering alternative targets,” though he stopped short of naming specific players.
As for the player’s own preference, it has not been a secret. Romano said: “Rashford, I can repeat with 100%, would love to stay in Barcelona.”
Rashford Has One Last Impression to Make
With only five fixtures remaining in Barcelona’s season, time is running out for Marcus Rashford. It could well be his last phase in Blaugrana colours, but he still has one last chance to impress.
That is not to say that he has failed to impress during 2025/26. Rather, the 28-year-old needs to convince club officials that he is the man to invest in.
Circumstances have granted the Englishman a stroke of good fortune in terms of playing time. Lamine Yamal’s unfortunate injury has ruled him out until the 2026 World Cup, and while Raphinha is expected to return for El Clásico on 10 May, a spot is up for grabs until then.
This should provide Rashford with more starts than he has seen throughout the early months of 2026. However, his luck didn’t immediately shift yesterday (25 April), as he was left out of the starting lineup in the 2-0 victory against Getafe. Hansi Flick preferred Fermin Lopez on the left wing and Roony Bardghji on the right. Nevertheless, Rashford made his impact off the bench. He scored the goal that sealed the win, which was his seventh league strike of the campaign.
That will do his chances of staying in Catalonia no harm. If his future is elsewhere, or even at Old Trafford, his resurgence in form provides his next club with a player ready to take on the world once more in his late twenties.
