- Jesse Lingard discusses Manchester United
- Academy graduate thinks Michael Carrick should get permanent job
- The pair shared the pitch on 55 occasions for Reds
There are not many players who ‘get’ Manchester United more than those who graduated from the youth academy.
Jesse Lingard is a prime example. He rose through the ranks to play for the U18 and U21 squads before making his senior debut. By the time he left in 2022, Lingard had spent 20 years at his boyhood club. In that process, he made 232 appearances, scored 35 goals, provided 21 assists, and created several iconic moments.
Because of this history, there are few active footballers whose opinions carry more weight than his on United. Lingard currently plays in Brazil for Corinthians, and he even captained the side during their AFC Champions League campaign last year. He belongs to a select group of players who have represented both his current club and United, joining the likes of Memphis Depay and Carlos Tevez.
Lingard Endorses Carrick for Permanent Job
In a recent interview with BBC, Lingard was asked about his former club.
Since Lingard left Old Trafford in 2022, there have been five different managers – interims included. Yet, the club finally feel settled on Michael Carrick, who is someone very familiar to the 33-year-old.
He said: “It can be difficult with different managers coming in, having different ideas, different personnel. But I think they’re really on the right track with Michael.” The pair shared the pitch on 55 occasions, playing over 3,000 minutes together at United.
Lingard added: “I know him [Carrick] from my United days. I know how he operates. The lads are doing really well under him. He’s got that Manchester United DNA inside of him. He knows the ins and outs of the club.”
One of the decisive factors for whether Carrick will be considered for appointment is the Champions League qualification. If the Reds win against Brentford tonight (27 April), they need just two points from their last four games. Favourable results elsewhere could seal the deal even quicker.
The former United man was asked whether his former teammate should get the permanent job. He said: “They’re winning a lot of games, probably get Champions League this season which is amazing. So yeah, I think so, 100%.”
What Does ‘United DNA’ Mean Today?
Lingard’s voice is yet another calling for Carrick to be given the job permanently. As far as INEOS is concerned, the make-or-break criterion for the former midfielder is securing Champions League football. Once that is achieved, his name will likely be cemented as a frontrunner for the head coach role. However, Carrick may still not yet be Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s preferred choice.
In terms of the club’s business, Carrick has operated under the assumption that he will remain manager beyond May. For example, his influence played a key factor in the contract extensions of Harry Maguire and Kobbie Mainoo. These were two players who had fallen out of favour under Ruben Amorim’s long-term vision.
Talk of “DNA” has always been a common theme regarding the club. No other Premier League side is associated with that word more than United, yet its true meaning has been lost in recent years. These days, “United DNA” appears to be defined by a winning culture and the promotion of youth, rather than by technical means like 4-4-2 formations or traditional wing play.
By that marker, Carrick has restored the club’s identity, losing just twice during his latest tenure while making the promotion of academy prospects a priority. Most recently, centreback Ayden Heaven has developed into a confident teenager under the tutelage of Carrick’s staff.
