- Manchester United U21S reach the Premier League 2 semi-final
- Face rivals Manchester City in a spot for the final
- Tottenham Hotspur vs Brighton and Hove Albion take the other semi-final
Manchester United’s under-21 side beat Crystal Palace 2-0, setting up a semi-final clash against rivals Manchester City for a place in the Premier League 2 play-off final, where one Manchester side will face either Chelsea or Brighton & Hove Albion.
United dominated large spells of the match but required nearly 40 minutes to break the deadlock. Daniel Armer opened the scoring after Shea Lacey’s free-kick forced a save from Palace goalkeeper Harry Lee, with the United centre-back reacting quickest to the looping rebound, heading past Lee while he remained grounded.
United doubled their advantage in the 72nd minute. After a powerful, driving run from centre-back Godwill Kukonki, Jack Fletcher collected possession before laying it off to striker Chido Obi, who buried his effort from just outside the penalty area.
Palace may feel aggrieved, however. On the stroke of half-time, Craig Farquhar thought he had restored parity, only for the goal to be ruled out for a foul on United goalkeeper Will Murdock.

United Face City
Mirroring an NBA-style format, the Premier League 2 campaign begins with a league phase before shifting into a seeded, bracket-style play-off system.
United came close to securing the number one seed. The Red Devils recorded the fewest losses in the league—three—and the second-highest number of wins—13—but Chelsea edged them on goal difference, despite finishing level on points.
Darren Fletcher’s side still secured the number two seed, placing them ahead of Manchester City and setting up a first-round clash with 15th-seeded Sunderland.
In a tightly contested match, goals from Obi, Jack Fletcher, and Lacey sealed a 3-2 victory, sending United through to face Crystal Palace.
City, meanwhile, finished third in the league phase, just three points behind United. They faced 14th-seeded Arsenal in their opening fixture, dispatching them efficiently with a 3-1 win.
Their quarter-final proved far more demanding. Trailing 2-1, City turned the game around with two goals in five minutes from Floyd Samba and Kaden Braithwaite, overcoming Aston Villa to reach the semi-finals.
Top seeds Chelsea, meanwhile, fell to Tottenham Hotspur. After labouring past 16th-seeded Middlesbrough, Chelsea faltered against eighth-seeded Spurs, losing 3-1 despite taking an early lead.
Who is Ready for First Team
For some players, this may mark their final season in youth football. Whilst Lacey, Obi, and Fletcher have already featured for the first team, players such as Armer, Jim Thwaites, and Kukonki look poised to make their debuts in the coming months.
The pre-season tour of Europe will offer one of the clearest opportunities to assess this emerging group. Whilst several may feature during the 2026/27 season, those appearances often come as brief cameos, limiting the chance to fully appreciate their quality.
Thwaites is a name gaining real traction within the United community. A dead-ball specialist, he has built a reputation in recent months for his precise, curling free-kicks, with one effort in the Manchester derby drawing comparisons to David Beckham.
Yet it is his all-round development that has stood out most this season. His movement on the ball already sets him apart, but last season exposed weaknesses off it, where he rarely committed to challenges.
He has since addressed that aspect of his game, while his passing has evolved into a genuine strength, with the 18-year-old now capable of switching play across the pitch with authority.
He was rewarded with a place on the bench in United’s 1-0 win against Chelsea, but due to playing 120 minutes against Crystal Palace in the FA Youth Cup semi-final, he understandably did not feature.
