- Harry Amass’ Manchester United contract is up next year
- Teenager has made seven first-team appearances
- Serious injury derailed encouraging season
Harry Amass has boasted a reputation as one of Manchester United’s most exciting young talents in recent years and made his first-team breakthrough last season. However, at the end of a mixed season for the teenage left-back, there is a question of whether he has much of a future at Old Trafford.
Amass arrived at United from Watford’s academy in 2023 and quickly developed comparisons to Luke Shaw in terms of his style and strengths. Ruben Amorim fast-tracked the 19-year-old’s promotion last term amid aggressive Premier League rotation as all focus turned towards the Europa League.
He made a good account of himself in an unforgiving environment. And with Shaw nearing the twilight of his career, an opportunity has undoubtedly opened up for United’s next long-term left-back to emerge.

Harry Amass has had no luck
Amass has what it takes, but the dominoes have not fallen in the right direction for the English starlet as of late, and time might be running out.
His season started impressively after joining Sheffield Wednesday on a short loan. It was an eye-catching move, given Wednesday’s status as the Championship’s crisis club, but Amass benefited hugely.
The England Under-19 defender quickly established himself as a crucial player and fan favourite, making 21 appearances in the first half of the campaign. But due to Wednesday’s impending doom, it was decided he would spend the second half at Norwich City, who finished ninth.
Sadly, Amass played no real role in that play-off push.
After one appearance, the starlet suffered a serious hamstring injury in training and returned to United for rehabilitation. According to The Athletic, he will likely remain with his parent club for pre-season while they decide on the next steps.
It is safe to say that Amass’ future is up in the air. He is entering the final year of his current contract at Old Trafford, and two young left-backs, Patrick Dorgu and Diego Leon, have arrived since the start of 2025.
Man Utd are in the market
Not only that, but United are reportedly also in the market for a new left-back this summer. The Red Devils are said to have shortlisted Brighton and Hove Albion’s Ferdi Kadioglu and West Ham United’s El Hadji Malick Diouf, among others.
Should another left-back under the age of 25 arrive on the shores of Salford Quays, you would worry for Amass and his pathway to build on his first seven senior appearances.
Given Amass’ talent and potential, it would be a surprise if United did not tie him down to a new contract to protect the value of their asset, more than anything. Another loan exit next season is likely, with the hope he can get a full season of first-team minutes under his belt.
Shaw’s contract is up at the end of the 2026/27 campaign, which could mark the moment when United will want to know who is best-placed to replace the 30-year-old going forward.
But if the Old Trafford decision-makers splash part of this summer’s budget on a new left-back, with Dorgu also showing encouraging signs, it could spell the end for Amass.
