- Manchester United interested in ‘exciting’ full back
- El Hadji Malick Diouf on club’s radar
- Reds will prioritise midfield but may recruit in defence
Manchester United could look towards the bottom end of the table to recruit bodies for the 2026/27 season.
On the radar so far are players from Wolves, such as Joao Gomes and Mateus Mane, who have already been relegated from the club. There is significant interest that has been reported on Spurs’ Micky van de Ven too.
Now, a new ‘exciting’ name has emerged from West Ham United, who find themselves in a perilous battle for survival. As it stands, either the East London or North London club will be following Burnley and Wolves to the Championship.

‘Exciting’ Defender on United’s Agenda
As revealed by Jamie Jackson and Jacob Steinberg of The Guardian, Manchester United are interested in El Hadji Malick Diouf of West Ham United.
The report states that the Reds are “looking at bringing in competition for Luke Shaw”. Tyrell Malacia will be leaving this summer, and Patrick Dorgu has reinvented himself as a left winger. The duo of Noussair Mazraoui and Diogo Dalot can deputise, but prefer the right side.
Any pursuit for the Senegalese star will be on hold until the midfield overhaul is completed. This is because INEOS will “initially direct their focus to strengthening their midfield” before looking at the left flank.
Ultimately, West Ham’s “negotiating position will be influenced by whether they stay up”, as they lie close to the bottom three. Despite a poor collective performance, Diouf has impressed on the left side. The fullback has started 26 out of 28 league matches, showcasing his aerial dominance and knack for assists. His all-round defending, as well as his aggressive front-foot, make him an ideal option for many teams.
The report goes on to say that the Red Devils “need quality depth” as they close in on a return to Champions League football for 2026/27.
Financial Ruins Could Force Sale
Earlier this year, the Hammers reported a loss of £104m for the previous financial year. This is only taken into account for last season’s 14th placed finish. Given the club’s current lowly position and the looming threat of relegation, a “cash shortfall” is now being forecasted.
Consequently, player sales will be necessary. Names like Malick Diouf are expected to be among the first to attract significant interest from English clubs. While the club’s official stance on whether they are actively listening to offers for the defender remains “unclear”, the financial data suggests they will be forced to sell.
Diouf is expected to represent Senegal at the upcoming World Cup, following his appearance at AFCON 2026. This international commitment allows United to be patient with the pursuit, as the player will be focused on his national team duties. Furthermore, a deep tournament run would require an extended break, likely delaying his return for the start of the domestic season. This timeline would actually benefit United, allowing them to ease him into the squad without immediate pressure.
