  • Manchester United interested in La Liga winger
  • Chelsea also eyeing fresh firepower
  • Red Devils’ attacking rebuild may not be complete

Manchester United dedicated last summer to overhauling the attack with the £200million-plus arrivals of Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo and Benjamin Sesko. But as the 2026 window draws closer, there are suggestions that the Red Devils’ attacking rebuild is not yet complete ahead of a Champions League return.

Sesko requires striker support, with Joshua Zirkzee’s future looking uncertain after another lacklustre season at Old Trafford. Another left-winger could also be on the agenda, though. Matheus Cunha is currently the only natural option at Michael Carrick’s disposal, and Patrick Dorgu the only alternative.

After the sales of Alejandro Garnacho and Antony last summer, it is Marcus Rashford and Jadon Sancho’s turn to leave United permanently in the coming months. And with that said, the M16 giants are reportedly looking towards La Liga for a potential replacement.

Man Utd and Chelsea eye Ander Barrenetxea

Real Sociedad winger Ander Barrenetxea’s stocks are rising following an influential season, which is fuelling the Basque club’s pursuit of European football.

The 24-year-old has scored four goals this term – including the 14th-second opener in La Real’s Copa del Rey final triumph over Atletico Madrid. He has also provided five assists.

According to Marca, United have added Barrenetxea to the winger shortlist ahead of the summer, having been left impressed by his speed, energy and flair. Chelsea are also said to be monitoring his situation, with both clubs willing to table substantial offers.

However, the report adds that La Real have no intention of selling Barrenetxea, valuing the Spain international’s current influence, as well as his potential.

Should Man Utd prioritise elsewhere?

United have plenty of work to do this summer to ensure they are sufficiently prepared to return to Europe’s premier competition.

The Red Devils’ midfield rebuild is the priority, while they may also require a back-up goalkeeper, striker and left-back, should they feel Luke Shaw will struggle to cope with the intensified schedule.

That said, while Dorgu can offer another option on the wing, you cannot blame United if they harbour concerns about a lack of attacking depth. Despite last summer’s investment, Carrick is likely one left winger short.

Their success in signing a new winger could come down to the resources remaining after addressing the higher priorities, including at least two midfielders.
