Kobbie Mainoo has been handed a clear route into England’s World Cup starting XI ahead of Saturday’s game against Panama.
Thomas Tuchel could make several changes for England’s final Group L fixture, according to SunSport. Mainoo may replace Declan Rice if the Arsenal midfielder receives a rest following his latest fitness concern.
The Guardian reports that Rice’s condition remains under assessment, with England unwilling to risk key players before the knockout rounds.
Mainoo Opportunity Gives United A Useful Test
Mainoo has remained unused during England’s opening two group matches. Read Man Utd tracked that frustration after the goalless draw against Ghana.
Panama now provides Tuchel with an obvious opportunity to test Mainoo’s press resistance and composure in possession. The midfielder could bring greater control after England struggled to break down Ghana.
Marcus Rashford’s position appears more delicate. The United forward is pushing to replace Anthony Gordon, but SunSport reports that a tight hamstring restricted him to seven minutes against Ghana.
That leaves Tuchel balancing Rashford’s sharpness against the risk of worsening the issue before the knockout rounds.
For Michael Carrick, either decision carries significance. A Mainoo start would provide fresh evidence of his ability at tournament level, while caution with Rashford may protect a player whose Old Trafford future remains unresolved.
