Manchester United have placed themselves firmly in the race to sign Gilberto Mora, but the club already know the hardest part of the chase may not be matching the competition.
TEAMtalk reports that United had scouts watching the 17-year-old Club Tijuana attacking midfielder as Mexico beat Czech Republic 3-0 at the 2026 World Cup.
Manchester City and Chelsea-linked ownership groups were also reportedly represented, underlining the speed at which Mora’s market has exploded.
United Face Real Madrid Problem In Mora Race
Mora’s appeal is obvious. He has already played senior football since 15, become a full Mexico international and strengthened his reputation with a composed World Cup display in the Mexican capital.
Reuters reported that Mora helped create Mexico’s second goal in the 3-0 win, as the hosts completed a perfect Group A campaign.
For United, this is a recruitment file built around timing rather than instant impact.
Michael Carrick’s squad still needs senior-ready additions, but INEOS also want elite-age assets before their price becomes unreachable. Read Man Utd has already covered how the club’s search has stretched into different midfield profiles, including Elliot Anderson after Manchester City’s agreement forced a pivot.
The complication is Real Madrid. TEAMtalk claims Madrid are viewed inside the game as Mora’s most likely eventual destination, with the youngster said to admire the Spanish giants.
That leaves United needing more than admiration from afar. They must sell a route: early trust, a clear development plan and a genuine attacking-midfield pathway at Old Trafford.
Mora cannot be treated like a normal transfer target. United are not only scouting a player; they are trying to stay relevant in a race that may be decided long before any formal bid lands.
