Manchester United striker Chido Obi is reportedly in talks over a loan move to Bundesliga club FC Koln.
Sports Mole, via Football Insider, reports that the Denmark Under-21 international could leave Old Trafford temporarily this summer in search of regular senior football.
Pete O’Rourke has also reported on X that Koln are working on a loan deal for the United prospect.
Michael Carrick Faces A Clear Chido Obi Pathway Test
United have already wrestled with this decision.
Obi’s academy output made a summer loan increasingly logical, but the next step was always about choosing the right environment rather than simply clearing a squad place.
Koln would offer a sharper test than another under-21 campaign.
The 18-year-old has the frame and finishing instincts to stretch senior centre-backs, but United need evidence that his pressing, hold-up play and penalty-box movement can survive adult football.
For Michael Carrick, the call is delicate.
Keeping Obi close would preserve direct coaching control during pre-season. Sending him to Germany would give United a cleaner read on whether he is a genuine first-team option or another talented forward still several layers away from the Old Trafford rotation.
That decision also sits inside United’s wider attacking reset, with the club already assessing senior striker options such as Brian Brobbey.
The timing matters.
A productive loan would protect Obi from token minutes while keeping his value moving in the right direction. For United, the right move is not about losing control of a talent.
It is about finding out how close he really is.
