Maxi Araujo Interest Gives Manchester United Left-Back Transfer Test

Manchester United have been handed a fresh left-back market test after Sporting CP defender Maxi Araujo emerged as another live name on the club’s summer watchlist.

TEAMtalk reports that United and Chelsea have joined Arsenal in the race for the Uruguay international, with Old Trafford representatives said to have watched him during Uruguay’s 2-2 World Cup draw with Cape Verde.

The attraction is obvious. Araujo is listed by FotMob as a left-back who can also operate at left midfield or left wing, which explains why his name fits United’s wider search.

TEAMtalk reports that the 26-year-old produced seven goals and six assists for Sporting last season, plus two goals and an assist at the World Cup.

Carrick Gets A Different Left-Back Profile

This is not simply a repeat of the Lewis Hall debate.

Hall is the younger Premier League development play, as Read Man Utd has already assessed in the club’s left-back transfer test.

Araujo is a more explosive, ready-made left-sided runner who could help Michael Carrick sharpen United’s attacking width quickly.

The issue is price discipline.

TEAMtalk claims Sporting are protected by a contract running to 2029 and an €80million release clause, although talks could open around £51million.

That leaves United with a familiar question: are they buying a specialist left-back, a wing-back, or a left-sided weapon to change Carrick’s front-foot structure?

Araujo has the profile to tempt them, but only if the fee does not swallow money needed elsewhere.
