Jermain Defoe still cannot make sense of it. Despite Sir Alex Ferguson wanting him at Old Trafford, the Defoe Man United move never happened, and the former striker admits the near miss still nags at him.
It is the sort of story that resurfaces every so often in football: the big-club approach that fades away without explanation. For a forward who spent his career chasing that step up, the unanswered question clearly still matters.
Sir Alex Ferguson wanted Jermain Defoe
According to Defoe, as reported by Manchester Evening News, the speculation around a move to United started early, while he was still banging in goals for West Ham.
“There was always speculation, even when I was at West Ham, about joining Man United,” he said.
Defoe also claims Manchester United players were talking to Sir Alex Ferguson about him as a potential signing. If true, that detail suggests the interest went beyond transfer gossip and reached inside the dressing room itself. It is Defoe’s account but it remains one of the more striking claims to emerge from his career.
The story resurfaced recently through an old teammate.
“I spoke with Patrice Evra recently and he also asked, ‘What happened when you were meant to sign for us? Sir Alex Ferguson was talking about you!'” Defoe said.
By his telling, Evra confirmed Ferguson wanted him at United, which only deepens the mystery of why a deal was never struck. Our Sir Alex transfer report covers other instances where the Scot’s reported interest in a player never translated into a signing.
Defoe’s Premier League career by numbers
Defoe’s career numbers explain why this particular what-if keeps coming up. He finished with 162 Premier League goals, which puts him 10th on the division’s all-time scoring list, and he won the League Cup in 2008 before retiring at Sunderland in 2022. Those are credentials that United, or any top club, would have wanted.
It is little surprise, then, that the subject keeps following him around.
“I get asked about why I didn’t sign for the likes of Arsenal, Liverpool, Chelsea or Man United a lot,” Defoe said.
Offers from elsewhere did come anyways.
“I got offers from Liverpool twice,” he said, with Steven Gerrard and Jamie Carragher involved while Kenny Dalglish was manager at Anfield.
There was also interest from abroad:
“I also got a call from an agent who wanted to take me to Juventus, but I’d already agreed to go back to Tottenham under Harry Redknapp in 2009.” Those details, set out in the original MEN report, show how often Defoe came close to taking a different path without ever doing so.
What would have changed at Manchester United
None of this changes United’s history, but it adds another aspect to how supporters remember Ferguson’s long reign: a manager reportedly admired by players he never signed, and striker after striker left wondering what might have been. Defoe’s case is simply the latest to resurface, this time through his own words.
It also lands at an interesting moment for the club. United’s current squad, built around developing talents such as Carlos Baleba, looks nothing like the one Ferguson managed when Defoe’s name was reportedly doing the rounds. Our squad-read piece and injury update on Baleba track that rebuild in detail. Our appearance-makers guide shows how many of Ferguson’s own signings became fixtures at Old Trafford, the kind of impact Defoe never got to make there.
A Defoe Man United move would have changed the story for both sides, and we will never know how. That is perhaps exactly why Defoe still brings it up.
