Manchester United are close to signing Karl Darlow on a free transfer as they reshape their goalkeeping group.
According to Laurie Whitwell, the 35-year-old is nearing a move to Old Trafford after leaving Leeds United.
Darlow would arrive as support for Senne Lammens, who remains United’s first-choice goalkeeper. Altay Bayindir is expected to leave, which has opened space for another senior option.
United have looked at experienced homegrown goalkeepers this summer. Darlow fits that profile and would bring Premier League experience without a transfer fee.
Darlow Move Points To Clear United Plan
Darlow spent last season with Leeds and left the club after his contract expired. He also has experience with Newcastle United, Nottingham Forest and the Wales national team.
United do not need another goalkeeper to challenge Lammens directly. They need reliable cover who can train at senior level, handle domestic cup games and support the wider squad.
That makes Darlow a practical target. He would give United an experienced No2 while allowing the club to move Bayindir on.
Bayindir joined United from Fenerbahce in 2023 but has struggled to secure a regular role. A summer exit would give him a better route to minutes.
For United, this deal looks like a low-cost squad move rather than a headline signing. It also shows the club want a cleaner structure behind Lammens before the new season.
