Manchester United have received encouragement in their pursuit of Manu Koné, but Roma’s €60m valuation leaves Michael Carrick and Jason Wilcox with a significant decision.
Roma head coach Gian Piero Gasperini has admitted the Italian club’s financial position could influence the future of several important players.
Speaking about Koné, Gasperini acknowledged that balancing the accounts remains important and suggested greater clarity should emerge during the coming weeks.
United and Liverpool have both been linked with the France international, who enhanced his reputation during the World Cup.
TEAMtalk reports that Koné remains under consideration at Old Trafford as United search for another midfielder after signing Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans.
Koné offers a different profile to Santos and Tielemans
United’s first two midfield additions have addressed several weaknesses.
Tielemans gives Carrick passing range, composure and Premier League experience. Santos brings energy, ball-winning ability and a willingness to make forward runs.
Neither is a specialist defensive midfielder.
Koné would not necessarily fill that traditional holding role either, but he would add greater athleticism and defensive coverage around United’s existing options.
The 25-year-old is comfortable carrying possession through pressure and covering large areas without the ball. He can recover quickly during transitions and compete physically against powerful Premier League midfields.
David Ornstein has said Wilcox will have a clear idea of the profile United still require, with the club seeking somebody who has the legs to cover ground.
That description fits Koné more closely than another possession-first midfielder.
ReadManUtd previously explained why Koné became central to United’s plans after the proposed Éderson transfer stalled. His mobility and ability to regain possession offered a logical alternative once concerns emerged over the Atalanta player.
The arrival of Tielemans has not completely removed that need.
A midfield containing Tielemans, Santos and Bruno Fernandes would possess creativity and technical quality. However, it could still become exposed when United lose possession high up the pitch.
Koné would provide Carrick with another player capable of recovering into defensive areas and carrying the ball away from pressure.
Roma’s valuation changes the calculation
The difficulty concerns price.
Roma have reportedly rejected an offer worth €40m from Atletico Madrid and are demanding €60m before considering a sale.
Corriere dello Sport reports that United and Liverpool have been informed of that valuation, with Roma refusing to offer discounts following Koné’s strong World Cup.
That figure would take United’s midfield spending beyond £130m this summer.
Santos arrived for a package worth around £50m, while United activated Tielemans’ £35m release clause. Committing another £50m or more would reduce the money available for Carrick’s full-back and attacking priorities.
United must therefore decide whether Koné is a necessary final piece or simply the best version of a profile they already possess.

Koné would complement that quality rather than duplicate it. He could also allow Santos to play with greater freedom instead of carrying most of the defensive running.
United cannot spend without a clear role
The football logic is strong, but United should not pay €60m merely because Roma are willing to sell.
Carrick would need a clear plan for Koné, Tielemans, Santos, Kobbie Mainoo and Bruno. Adding another expensive midfielder without defining their responsibilities would create competition without necessarily producing balance.
Koné makes most sense as the athletic midfielder who protects transitions, drives through pressure and supports the press.
He would not arrive as a pure No 6, and United may still lack a specialist capable of controlling the area directly in front of the defence.
Roma’s financial position offers United an opportunity, but not necessarily a bargain.
Koné could complete Carrick’s midfield rebuild. At €60m, United must be certain he completes it rather than simply making it larger.
