Manchester United Handed Kone Transfer Boost As Roma Opens Door To Sale

Manchester United have been handed a fresh boost in their pursuit of Roma midfielder Manu Kone, with head coach Gian Piero Gasperini all but confirming the France international could be sold this summer.

According to a fresh update from TEAMtalk, Gasperini told Rai Radio Uno that Roma “need to balance the books” financially and that there will be “more clarity in the coming weeks” over Kone’s future at the Stadio Olimpico. Kone’s agent has already been in England for several days holding talks with Premier League clubs, according to Gazzetta dello Sport, with United and Liverpool both credited with interest in the 25-year-old after his impressive performances for France at this summer’s World Cup.

David Ornstein Reveals Wilcox’s Search For A Midfielder With ‘Legs’

Speaking on The Athletic FC podcast, David Ornstein said United’s director of football Jason Wilcox will have a “clear vision” for the club’s third midfield addition of the summer, having already brought in Andrey Santos and moved to sign Youri Tielemans on release clauses. Ornstein said United would want “somebody with legs” who can “really cover ground” alongside the more progressive, ball-playing profiles already added.

Roma are reported to want around €60m (£51m) for Kone, having already turned down a €40m bid from Atletico Madrid, according to Corriere dello Sport. Meeting that valuation would take United’s outlay on midfield reinforcements beyond £130m for the summer alone.

Kone made 37 appearances for Roma last season and was one of France’s standout performers at the World Cup, sharpening suitors’ interest further. With Wilcox’s profile for the role now public and Roma’s stance softening, the coming weeks could decide whether Kone completes United’s midfield rebuild.
