Why Manu Kone is now key to Man United rebuild after Ederson blow

Manchester United’s decision to step back from Ederson looks abrupt, but it also reveals something important about Michael Carrick’s rebuild.

United had spent weeks working on a deal for the Atalanta midfielder. The structure looked clear, the fee had been widely reported and the move appeared close to completion.

Instead, concerns from a second medical have pushed the transfer into doubt and sent United back into the market.

Supporters will find the timing frustrating. United have spent much of the summer trying to strengthen the middle of the pitch, and Ederson looked set to form a major part of that plan. But walking away from a problem can be as important as completing a deal.

ReadManUtd covered Ederson’s second medical assessment on Thursday, and the latest turn suggests those checks were far from routine.

Fabrizio Romano has reported United informed Atalanta the deal was off after fresh concern over Ederson’s knee. Florian Plettenberg later suggested sources were still stopping short of calling it completely dead.

United Have Chosen Caution Over Short-Term Relief

Carrick needs midfielders, but United do not need the wrong midfielder on risky medical advice.

If the club have genuine concerns over Ederson’s knee, pulling back makes sense, even if it leaves them short in the short term.

United have already seen how damaging midfield injuries can become. Manuel Ugarte’s absence and the wider summer turnover have left the department looking thin, which helps explain why the club moved so hard for Andrey Santos after agreeing a £50m deal with Chelsea.

Santos gives Carrick legs, aggression and forward drive. He does not solve every midfield problem on his own.

Ederson mattered because he looked like the second pillar of the rebuild. If he is no longer viable, United need to replace that profile quickly rather than ask Santos to cover too much ground alone.

Manu Kone Now Looks The Obvious Next Move

Manu Kone is the name that keeps circling back.

TEAMtalk has reported United have already made enquiries for the Roma midfielder, who could be available for around £50m. If Ederson falls away fully, Kone looks like the clearest alternative on the board.

The football logic is easy to see. Kone offers the profile Carrick still needs: ball-winning, athleticism, strong carrying power and the ability to handle high-level matches.

His performances for France at the World Cup have strengthened that case. He has looked ready for a bigger role, and United need a midfielder who can help set the level quickly.

He would not be a cheap replacement, but United have already freed the money earmarked for the Ederson deal. A move for Kone would turn the Ederson setback into a recalibration, not a collapse.

United are building for a season that includes Champions League football. They cannot afford another midfield gamble that becomes a management issue by October.

Carrick Still Needs The Midfield To Take Shape Fast

Even with Santos arriving, United are not finished.

Kobbie Mainoo remains a central figure. Bruno Fernandes will still shape much of the team’s rhythm. Carrick also needs a proper defensive platform behind them.

Ederson had a clear route into that role. Kone may now take it.

There is also a timing issue. Pre-season has already started, and Carrick would clearly prefer his main midfield group in place sooner rather than later. The longer the search drags on, the less time United have to build balance before the season begins.

Still, panic would be the bigger risk.

United have spent too many past windows reacting to setbacks by forcing the next move. If this summer is meant to look different, the Ederson decision needs the right response, not just the quickest one.

The message from Carrington is simple enough. United will not ignore a medical concern just to keep a transfer moving.

Recruitment now has to finish the job. If Ederson is gone, the replacement must be ready, credible and suited to the role Carrick needs.

Kone looks like that player on paper. The next few days should show whether United see him the same way.
