Manchester United have already strengthened their midfield with the signings of Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans this summer. However, Man Utd still want a more defensive option following Casemiro’s departure and Manuel Ugarte’s knee injury, which is expected to keep him out for a long time.
According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, Manchester United are currently leading the race for Manu Kone of AS Roma. Chelsea are also reportedly keeping a close eye on the situation.
AS Roma are believed to value Kone at around €55million, approximately £48m, as they consider raising funds through a major summer departure.
Kone wants Premier League move
Kone’s preference could strengthen Man United’s position. The 25-year-old is believed to be keen to test himself in the Premier League after a possible move to Paris Saint-Germain failed to materialise.
Chelsea are also monitoring his situation, which could create some tough competition if Manchester United decide to advance negotiations.
As Read Man Utd previously reported, Roma manager Gian Piero Gasperini has already admitted the club may need to part with an important player to balance their finances.
Kone started four matches for France at the World Cup and appeared from the bench during their semi-final defeat at the hands of Spain.
Would Kone be the right signing for Manchester United?
His athleticism, ball carrying and defensive work would give Carrick a different profile alongside Santos and Tielemans. Manchester United have not yet submitted a confirmed bid. However, their level of interest and Koné’s desire to play in England could make him one of the most realistic options to complete the midfield rebuild.
One would imagine that the club would be keeping other potential targets on their mind as well, in case they need to change plans in case a move for Kone does not materialise.
Of course, we already saw something similar happen with Ederson, who had looked on his way to Man Utd before a move fell apart in the final steps.
