Manchester United handed late injury blow at World Cup

Manchester United fans will already have their eyes set on the upcoming campaign. Michael Carrick’s side have already begun their pre-season as they prepare to return to action.

But they have been handed a late injury blow at the World Cup. The extent of it is not completely clear yet either, which makes things even more difficult to digest if you are a Man Utd fan.

The player we are talking about is none other than Kobbie Mainoo. He was included in Thomas Tuchel’s World Cup squad ahead of much more high-profile names.

At the end of the day, it was not a productive tournament for him. Mainoo is returning from the World Cup without playing a single minute of football for the Three Lions and with an injury.

FA confirms Kobbie Mainoo injury

The hope had been that Mainoo would feature in the third-place game. But even that opportunity did not come, and it appears to have been due to the fact that he is carrying an injury.

According to GOAL, the FA dropped the update on Mainoo with an update stating:

“Kobbie Mainoo is ruled out of today’s matchday squad to face France due to injury.”

The extent or nature of the injury does not seem to be clear yet. One would imagine that we will get to know a lot more over the coming days.

For now, it is time for the likes of Mainoo to get some well-earned rest. And if the injury is not serious, one would expect him to arrive on pre-season duty soon, having not featured at all at the World Cup.

Manchester United have strengthened their midfield

Mainoo’s injury could be a worry for Manchester United. Let us not forget that he had revived his career at Old Trafford last season after the arrival of Carrick as manager.

Until that point, it had looked like he was bound to be on his way out of Manchester United. But his newfound role in Carrick’s plans saw him secure his future at Old Trafford.

That being said, one cannot overlook the fact that Manchester United have already strengthened their midfield this summer. They have brought in Andrey Santos from Chelsea and Youri Tielemans from Aston Villa.

It is believed that the club will look to bring in a third midfielder as well in order to fill the void left behind by Casemiro. So, how big of a role is Mainoo going to have next season? That is a genuine question worth asking right now.
