Three Man Utd stars with everything to prove against Leeds

Man Utd vs Leeds may officially be another pre-season friendly, but Wednesday night could have significant consequences for several players trying to force their way into Michael Carrick’s plans.

Marcus Rashford, Kobbie Mainoo and Noussair Mazraoui all have points to prove at Croke Park with the Premier League opener now just 10 days away.

United face Leeds at 7.30pm BST in Dublin before completing their summer programme against AC Milan on Saturday. Manchester United’s official match preview confirms that Carrick now has significantly more senior options following the return of his post-World Cup players.

ReadManUtd has already looked at four positions still up for grabs before the Premier League opener. Tonight offers another opportunity for three players in particular to change Carrick’s thinking.

Marcus Rashford has biggest point to prove against Leeds

Few United players will attract more attention in Dublin than Rashford.

The forward has returned to Carrick’s squad after spending last season on loan at Barcelona and could make his first United appearance since December 2024. United confirmed Rashford was among nine players joining the Ireland training camp after an extended summer break.

ReadManUtd reported earlier this week that United are no longer desperate to sell Rashford, creating a genuine route back into Carrick’s plans if no suitable transfer emerges.

A place on the bench may be more realistic than an immediate start against Leeds, but even 30 minutes would carry significance.

Patrick Dorgu and Matheus Cunha have already been competing for opportunities from the left. Rashford now needs to remind Carrick what he can offer before the season begins.

Kobbie Mainoo needs to re-enter midfield conversation

Mainoo is another returning international who has had little opportunity to influence United’s pre-season.

He joined Rashford and the other late arrivals in Ireland after his World Cup involvement, giving Carrick another midfield option at precisely the moment competition is increasing. United’s official Ireland update confirmed Mainoo has rejoined the senior group.

Andrey Santos has impressed throughout the summer, while Youri Tielemans made his debut against PSG. Mason Mount’s foot problem has complicated the picture further.

Mainoo therefore cannot simply assume his previous status guarantees him a starting place.

Tonight may not be about playing 90 minutes. It is about showing Carrick that he deserves to be part of the midfield conversation when United travel to Hull City on 22 August.

Mazraoui can seize right-back opportunity

The right-back battle remains one of the least settled areas of Carrick’s XI.

Diogo Dalot has received significant pre-season minutes, but Mazraoui is now fully back with the group after his delayed summer return. In a fresh interview with United, the Morocco international said he has been encouraged by the progress he has seen since rejoining Carrick’s squad.

ReadManUtd’s predicted XI against Leeds highlighted the direct competition between Mazraoui and Dalot for the position.

Mazraoui’s versatility has always been useful, but he now needs minutes.

A convincing performance against Leeds could leave Carrick with a genuine decision before competitive football returns.

Rashford, Mainoo and Mazraoui are at different stages of their United careers, but tonight offers the same opportunity to all three.

With the Premier League approaching quickly, there are very few auditions left.
